Her name was Efunroye Tinubu, and she was one of the most prominent slave traders in Nigerian history. Despite sharing the same surname, she was not related by blood to the present-day Tinubu family.
She was born in Abeokuta around 1810 and learned trading from her mother at a young age. In 1833, she married Oba Adele, a former King of Lagos.
Using her influence and connections, she built a powerful trading network, dealing in tobacco, firearms, and enslaved people. She eventually became one of the most influential traders in Nigerian history and was said to have owned hundreds of slaves.
According to historical accounts, when Portuguese traders asked her to lower the price of slaves, she reportedly replied, "I would rather drown them than reduce the price."
Efunroye Tinubu died in 1887 at the age of about 77.
