There’s a familiar critique from the banking world:
Crypto — and especially stablecoins — risks pulling deposits out of the traditional system, putting pressure on regional banks and reshaping how money moves, not necessarily for the better.
But what if the answer isn’t fighting that shift, but it’s *adapting* to it?
Today’s conversation was right at that intersection.
The Cari Network built on ZKsync Prividium technology, is an example of a different path: tokenized bank deposits that stay on bank balance sheets, remain FDIC-insured, and operate within existing regulatory frameworks — but gain the programmability and settlement advantages of crypto rails.
It’s being developed alongside major US regional banks, so this isn’t merely theoretical. It’s banks actively experimenting with how to bring deposits onchain.
Are we moving toward a world where stablecoins compete with banks — or one where banks themselves become the issuers of onchain money?
To unpack that, I was joined by Omar Azhar (@Ozhar) from Matter Labs (@the_matter_labs).
