I heard a couple of voice messages from relatives in Gaza talking about the food situation. Listening to them was incredibly difficult and heartbreaking. The situation is far beyond catastrophic. The price of wheat flour is astronomical. To give you an example, a family of six needs 18 loaves of bread just to get through the day, one loaf per person for breakfast, one for lunch, and one for dinner, with nothing else to eat with it. Securing this daily batch of bread costs $100. Many people outside Palestine regularly (as regular as possible) transfer money via banks to relatives or friends in Gaza. However, for recipients to receive physical cash, they must go through money changers (since banks have been disrupted since nearly the beginning of Israel’s assault), who charges a 40% fee on the dollar. This means that if you send $100, they actually receive only $60. The finances of those abroad sending money to Gaza are stretched beyond their limits, as this is a protracted crisis with no end in sight. What Israel is doing in Gaza is far beyond savage, far beyond brutal. And all of this is happening in plain sight, yet no one lifts a finger to pressure Israel to stop this madness. We are truly living through one of the worst times in human history.
