I get “You’re an insensitive monster” hate from the victim community for my posts where I tell people to “get over” their pasts etc. And I thought I’d share why I’m unlikely to stop.
Behavior change is my profession. It’s all I do everyday. Getting people to change what they do.
Not intentions.
Not energy.
Not spirit.
Not emotions.
Change what they DO.
And at the end of the day, behavior changes or it doesn’t.
Let’s dive in shall we.
Victim Ex: I can’t “just get over it” because “I have trauma”
Translation: I had a negative experience that taught me a different way of acting in a specific circumstance. And I am unwilling to go through a relearning process, so that under these same conditions, I can learn a new behavior.
Ex:
I can say “I get emotional (translation to behavior: I insult people) when people call me my first name because my uncle did and he beat me. So I associate my name with him beating me. This CAUSES me to say insults.”
Halfway. You repeat behaviors of the past (insulting people who say your name) because you were rewarded for doing so. Either by avoiding something bad (maybe he went away) or by having something good happen (people laughed).
But at the end of the day - you just insult people when they call your name.
So - you can accept that (and blame your uncle). And use him as permission to not do what you want…forever.
Or
You can relearn how to NOT insult people under the same condition (people say your name) by continuously exposing yourself to conditions as close to it as possible until you habituate and stop.
When you do that, all the pseudo therapists will say you have “healed your trauma” “aligned your spirit” “hugged your inner child” whatever.
But all we did was change behavior. So you might as well just get to the core of it and identify the incorrect behavior. And begin teaching yourself something new.
In other words, teach yourself to do something else besides insulting people who say your name.
You just have a new output when the old input goes in. Also known as “learning.”
I share this stuff because it changed my life. And I’ve had enough people tell me it changed theirs…that I’ve been rewarded for doing it…so I keep doing it.
TLDR: Do or don’t. Nothing else matters.

"Perfection is impossible.
In the 1,526 singles matches I played in my career, I won almost 80% of those matches.
But what percentage of points did I win?
54%
In other words, even top ranked tennis players win barely more than half the points they play.
When you lose ever second point on average, you learn not to dwell on every shot.
You teach yourself to think:
'Okay, I double faulted...it's only a point.'
'Okay, I came to the net and I got passed again...it's only a point.'
Even a great shot, an overhead backhand smash that ends up on ESPN's top 10 playlist – that too is just a point.
Here's why I'm telling you this.
When you're playing a point, it has to be the most important thing in the world. And it is.
But when it's behind you, it's behind you.
This mindset is crucial – because it frees you to fully commit to the next point with intensity, clarity, and focus."

Learn to ask, “If this is the only thing I accomplish today, will I be satisfied with my day?”
Don’t ever arrive at the office or in front of your computer without a clear list of priorities. You’ll just read unassociated e-mail and scramble your brain for the day. Compile your to-do list for tomorrow no later than this evening. I don’t recommend using digital to-do lists, because it is possible to add an infinite number of items. I use a standard piece of paper folded in half three times, which fits perfectly in the pocket and limits you to noting only a few items.
There should never be more than two mission-critical items to complete each day. Never. It just isn’t necessary if they’re actually high-impact.
If you are stuck trying to decide between multiple items that all seem crucial, as happens to all of us, look at each in turn and ask yourself, If this is the only thing I accomplish today, will I be satisfied with my day?
To counter the seemingly urgent, ask yourself: What will happen if I don’t do this, and is it worth putting off the important to do it?

Pale Blue Dot is a photo of Earth that was taken by the Voyager 1 space probe in 1990 from a distance of about 6 billion kilometers (3.7 billion miles) as it was leaving our solar system. This is what Carl Sagan said about the photo:
"Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it, everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor, and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every 'superstar,' every 'supreme leader,' every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there — on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.
The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand. It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.”

Triggers Are Your Teachers.
A Guide To Working Through Your Emotional Triggers:
Step 1: Identify Your Triggers: when you have a strong emotional reaction pause and notice it. Adrenaline will rush through your body, just feel it. Allow it.
Step 2: Have The Courage To Look: don't distract yourself or react to it. Learn from it. Journal about what you were thinking or feeling and, you will notice patterns (ex: I am emotionally reactive when I feel like I'm being ignored, or not seen)
Step 3: Self Soothe:
"I am safe"
"I can do difficult things"
"It's ok for me to make mistakes"
Soothing ourselves through a compassionate inner narrative allows the emotional response to pass.
Step 4: Set Boundaries: let's say a trigger for you is feeling not good enough from growing up in a critical home. A friend jokingly calls you an idiot.
Set a boundary: "I know you're joking, and I just don't like being called an idiot even in a joking way.
The more you practice, the more in control you'll feel when triggered.
You'll develop self trust and confidence.
