We really need to talk about the traditions of St John's night. The dishonesty and the complete environmental vandalism is both disturbing and sickening. As a teacher, how can I ask students to be environmentally aware. Shame on people who do this. This masquerades as tradition

@CathMMurphy Tradition, likely Christianised celebration of a pre-Christian solstice bonfire. I think with China churning out new coal plants on a regular basis and Germany reverting to coal power for a while, we can allow ourselves the continuation of a thousand plus years old tradition.

The ancient tradition of the #StJohnsEve bonfire is alive and well this evening in the West of Ireland. The smell of smoke hangs in the air and new fires put up their signals every few minutes as dusk begins its approach.

@declanganley There's a principle here. Two wrongs don't make a right etc. I love tradition but Declan, really, people burning plastics, tyres etc really can't be justified by tradition, religion or anything else. The fires I see are an exercise in getting rid of awkward rubbish for free.

@declanganley I'm all for tradition but black smoke billowing along the horizon here in our beautiful Galway countryside only makes me feel horrified and sad frankly.
