Vanderbilt has been making a push to distinguish themselves from the Ivies by becoming an explicitly Jewish-friendly institution. This is a smart move which will help their university grow prestige over time as families start to see it as preferable to Harvard.

the way we evaluate edtech is broken. a product can serve 13 million kids for 15 years with zero independent evidence that it works, and still make the approved vendor list in most states. the bar for getting into classrooms is "widely used." not "proven effective." we would never accept that standard for medicine or engineering. but for the tools shaping how kids learn to read and write, somehow vibes and market share are good enough.

Absolutely!!! Why are we STILL requiring students to take foreign language in high school when there is virtually no benefit. Do high schoolers become fluent in the foreign language? No. Does it have a high ROI on cognitive development and brain health? Also no. Students’ brains would benefit more from 60 minutes of aerobic exercise than from sitting in a foreign language class. Also, we all have translators in our pockets. This is one of the many requirements in education whose time has expired. Public ed must stop wasting students’ time.

I hate how pervasive this attitude has become. “Why teach languages in schools? Why bother teaching fiction / myth / poetry?” Because school is about exposure to new things; because education without the humanities is worthless; because if the schools don’t teach them, who will?

Schools exist to support families, not replace parents. That means parents need to actually parent, and the govt & communities need to stop treating schools as the fix for bad parenting. If you’re an educator who thinks otherwise, you’ve watched too many teacher hero movies.

Also one of the least politically diverse departments and at the bottom of hours spent studying of any major. So many of the problems in K-PhD originate in Ed schools including some of the worst speech policing policies. I believe Ed schools need to be completely rethought
