So, this is a really well thought out operation by @CENTCOM. The US could not free up aerial and naval forces for clearing the Strait during offensive operations against Iran. With the ceasefire in place, @US5thFleet could divert resources and assets to this defensive mission, after conducting a large resupply operation at Diego Garcia. This challenges Iran's assertion over their control of the Strait and their effort to create new lanes into and out of the Persian Gulf in their territorial waters and regulated by the IRGC.

It looks like USS Michael Murphy and Frank Peterson did sail the Strait of Hormuz into the Persian Gulf and back out.

I can hardly believe this, but this is Day 500 of protests in Georgia! For 500 days, protesters have gathered every day in 8+ cities despite heavy fines, mass arrests, and abuse. The pro-Russian Georgian Dream regime must end.

Moldova has formally quit the Commonwealth of Independent States. President Maia Sandu signed decrees denouncing the Charter and core treaties, published in Monitorul Oficial and now in force.

@esjesjesj Schools canโ€™t teach one to google โ€œwhat kind of government did Chile have in the 1970s and 80s?โ€ before opening ones yap to display oneโ€™s ignorance. This is really a whole of society issue.

The LAIRCM system is basically a mini CIWS for big, slow aircraft like the C-130, C-17, and KC-46. Its main job is to stop heat-seeking/IR missiles, especially MANPADS. It uses several sensors placed around the aircraft to watch for the telltale signature of a missile launch. Once it spots a threat, it goes into action mode. It system doesn't just release flares, but it also fires a concentrated laser beam directly at the incoming missile's seeker to "blind" it and steer it off course. Itโ€™s fully automated, so the pilots can focus on flying while the system counters the threat. Itโ€™s a fairly new and sophisticated piece of kit. 2/2

If the move not being coordinated with Iran is true, it'd be the geopolitical equivalent of trying to sneak someone in/out the back of a hostage standoff when the hostage-taker is distracted talking to a negotiator. Sounds very high risk, but I have my doubts: why ping AIS then?

@denisewu This is not actually surprising. Especially since some may have been floating and some moored mines may have broken loose. Also, thereโ€™s a non-zero chance they never actually placed any mines and the whole thing is a bluff.

@JoeTruzman If I actually thought Vance, Vitkoff and comrade Jared would be at physical risk, I would be very happy to see them go. As it is, you should calm down and rest easy in the knowledge that they are all far too incompetent to negotiate a real peace agreement.

๐Ÿฆ”A researcher invented a fake eye condition called bixonimania, uploaded two obviously fraudulent papers about it to an academic server, and watched major AI systems present it as real medicine within weeks. The fake papers thanked Starfleet Academy, cited funding from the Professor Sideshow Bob Foundation and the University of Fellowship of the Ring, and stated mid-paper that the entire thing was made up. Google's Gemini told users it was caused by blue light. Perplexity cited its prevalence at one in 90,000 people. ChatGPT advised users whether their symptoms matched. The fake research was then cited in a peer-reviewed journal that only retracted it after Nature contacted the publisher. My Take The researcher made the papers as obviously fake as possible on purpose. The AI systems didn't catch it. Neither did the human researchers who cited it in real journals, which means people are feeding AI-generated references into their work without reading what they're actually citing. I've covered the FDA using AI for drug review, the NYC hospital CEO ready to replace radiologists, and ChatGPT Health launching this year. All of that is happening in the same environment where a condition funded by a Simpsons character and endorsed by the crew of the Enterprise was being presented as emerging medical consensus. The people making these deployment decisions seem to believe the pipeline from research to AI to patient is more supervised than it actually is. This experiment suggests it isn't supervised much at all. Hedgie๐Ÿค— nature.com/articles/d4158โ€ฆ
