Northcote Thomas photos (1910-13) show little structured headscarf, focus on hair/beads. Elaborate flowing ichafu styles grew later via trade/migration. Ichafu look: Soft, simple scarf tied loosely with graceful folds around head (subtle, not stiff). Yoruba gele pre-colonial: Large stiff fabric (often aso-oke) tied into tall, sculptural, pleated voluminous shapes signaling status/marital info (e.g., tilt/height); worn with buba, iro, ipele.
