Two weeks ago an amateur comic went viral for recycling a bit about Petsmart that I did on The Ellen Show eight years ago. Now this guy is going viral for sharing a joke I did in my Dry Bar special three years ago and posted on this platform multiple times. Previously Jeff Dye went viral for making a joke about Lizzo that was identical to a previous joke I had done about Caitlyn Jenner. I regularly see Twitter comics and online satire sites go viral for posting jokes that I or other comics did weeks, months, or years before. I truly cannot put into words how hellishly awful social media and this garbage platform in particular are for comedy. Originality doesn’t matter. Creativity doesn’t matter. Talent doesn’t matter. Everything is driven by algorithms, engagement farming, clout-chasing, promoted content, and whatever happens to be trending moment by moment. Elon Musk and this idiotic platform are a cancer on comedy. The only people who claim it is good for comedy are people who are themselves bad at comedy.
