The Story of Loki: From a Storm to the Stars
This is the story of how Loki came into my life and how he changed it forever.
Today, Loki runs free beyond the rainbow bridge, having gained his wings on May 22, 2025. But his spirit is still here, wrapped around my heart, and his story deserves to be told. Because Loki was not just a dog. He was a blessing, a teacher, a best friend, and a reminder that even in a world full of cruelty, love can change everything.
It all began after a fierce storm the night before. Thunder had shaken the sky and rain poured down. Then as I was performing my duties as an Animal Control Officer the next day patrolling a state park, I heard faint whimpering coming from a cardboard box near a trailhead.
When I opened the box, my heart sank. Inside were eight tiny puppies, soaked, shivering, and terrified. They could not have been more than four weeks old, according to the vet, and he didnโt weigh more than 1.2 pounds. The little ones had spent the entire stormy night huddled together in that cardboard box, clinging to each other for warmth and survival.
I scooped them up and rushed them to the vet, praying they would make it. Sadly, two of them passed after we arrived, despite every effort to save them. But then, one little pup caught my eye. Even in his fragile state, there was something strong about him. He looked at me with the most beautiful eyes I had ever seen. I pointed and said, โI want that one.โ
That was Loki.
He survived. Not just survived, but thrived. Loki came home with me and quickly became part of our family. For a special birthday, I gave Loki to my son as a gift. My son smiled and said, โIn that case, it makes me Granny.โ However, Loki always thought he was my baby. So from that day on, Loki and Granny became known literally all over the world through social media. To this day, Loki has a very large following of fans who love his goofy personality and big heart.
Loki grew into the most loving, goofy, and loyal companion anyone could ask for. He had a big yard to explore, canine siblings to wrestle and nap with, and a granny and grandpa who loved him beyond words. Every morning he would wait for me to come home from work, and every evening he would chase bugs and squirrels with his sister or play rope with his dad.
Because of those thunderstorms he endured at such a young age, Loki was always afraid of thunder. No matter how big he got, every time a storm rolled in, he would cower and press himself as close to me as he could possibly get. He needed to feel safe, and I made sure he always knew he was.
Loki had a huge personality. He would give me those big, soulful eyes when he wanted extra nummies, and when he did not get his way, he would flash his classic side-eye and let out his signature Lugnut pffft. I called him my big Lugnut, my mischievous, gentle Pittie, and he never failed to make us laugh. He brought so much joy into our lives.
Time, as always, kept moving. Lokiโs body grew tired, but his spirit never dimmed. On May 22, 2025, I held him as he gained his wings. That day broke my heart, but I know he is still with me. I feel him in the quiet moments, in the rustling leaves, and in the space he still fills in our home.
Loki started life abandoned in a cardboard box during a thunderstorm, but he left this world knowing what it meant to be deeply loved. He is the reason I dream of starting my own rescue, to make sure other animals get the same chance he did. A chance to be safe, to be loved, and to become someoneโs angel, just like he became mine.
Fly high, Loki. You were, and always will be, our blessing from God. Furever in our hearts, furever our good boy. ๐
