Basketball will reveal your truth, every single time. The ball never lies. Your effort never lies. Your discipline never lies. But here's the reality check: Sometimes, even if you do everything right, the scoreboard won't go your way. Teach your players this: Control your attitude, your hustle, your focus. That's real victory. Win or lose, who you become lasts longer than any final score. Are you building champions or just chasing wins?

A great assistant coach: • Brings energy daily • Fixes problems quietly • Speaks truth privately • Makes the head coach’s job easier • Knows it’s always about the program They don’t need a title to lead. They just do it. 💯

Longtime Pasadena boys basketball coach Tony Brooks told me this morning he is resigning to enjoy retirement. He wrote a statement for Bulldogs fans and supporters. “My connection to Pasadena High School basketball began when I was eight years old at "Bulldog Camp".  Being a Bulldog meant so much more than just playing basketball.  It meant developing a brotherhood among the players, it meant understanding the importance of being a true "student athlete", and it meant striving for a goal that required a collective effort amongst the team and sacrificing your own glory for the benefit of the team. " King D"  This philosophy has led to over 266 wins in 12 years, 11 Pacific League Championships, Two CIF Division 1 Runner up, Two CIF State Regional Finals and over 15 Division 1 and Division II Scholarships. As a ballboy and a player, I learned the importance of hard work and dedicating yourself to perfecting your skills.  As an assistant coach and ultimately a head coach, I made sure that each player understood that there were great lessons  that had to happen for success to follow. No sacrifice, no success.  Each player understood to be great sons, great students and great ballplayers. My coaching has given me so much fulfillment and value in my life.  The friendships and relationships have added so much to my family.  I absolutely love my players. But at this point it is time to look to the next phase of my life.  I am thankful for all of the parents that helped support the program by supporting their sons as well as all of the team members. I am thankful for all of the coaches that worked so hard and dedicated so much time for the players.  I am  thankful for my beautiful wife, Sherrie who was the best "coaches wife" any coach could wish for.  I would like to thank George Terzian, the coach that started it all, I would like to thank Bill Duwe for his guidance and mentorship, and I would like to thank Tim Tucker for his brotherly support. It has been an honor to be a part of the legacy of Pasadena Basketball. With this letter, I am announcing my retirement from Head coach at Pasadena boys basketball. God, Family, Dogs!!

Steve Kerr shares what made Gregg Popovich and Phil Jackson such great coaches. "What I loved about both of them - they're very different from one another, but they both had the same quality." "You knew they cared about you. You could feel that they loved you and they cared about you. But you were a little afraid of them." "Just a little bit. Almost like you'd feel about a parent." They had that great balance of warm and demanding. Then he clarified: "Not afraid physically, but you were afraid to disappoint them. That's probably the better way to put it." The sweet spot: care and accountability. "They both cared so deeply about me and my family. They knew everything about my life. They asked questions. They were more engaged and more involved with me than any coaches I ever had." "Knew all my kids' names. That stuff matters." "And then at practice, if you weren't on it, you were gonna hear it...What a great combination." They loved you enough to know you. They loved you enough to push you. That's the balance every leader should aim for - care so deeply that people are afraid to let you down. (🎥 Berkley Haas)

The coach's job is to coach the team. Your job is to love your kid no matter what. Don't confuse the two roles.

The greatest coaches don't just develop players; they develop people. Your impact isn't measured by how many games you win, it's in how many *lives* you help shape. Win at life first, and everything else follows.

Most sideline problems come from one place. Parents who forgot it's not their experience. Great ones stay positive, trust the process, and say one thing: "I love watching you play." That's it.
