#German friends and fellow specialists, how do you translate Stammbuch into English (without reverting to album amicorum!). We need it for a museum text, but my standard “friendship album” in this case still feels too jargony. #academictwitter #hivemind #museums

@Handwerkwissen @Eva_Voelker I think an autograph book suggests that your collecting famous people’s signatures; and I don’t think is what you’re suggesting. It’s a toughy!

@Collage_Res_Net @Eva_Voelker 🤔That’s an interesting thought. Certainly contemporary audiences (today) would understand that reference point best. But then the practice of visiting others and having them sign your Stammbuch gets a little lost. I will have to ponder, but first thank you for the suggestion!

@Eva_Voelker Yes, those of course also exist. But The context here is the 18th and 19th centuries (which I should have noted), where it was common for visitors to sign and write a message in such a book. One typically also took a Stammbuch with them when travelling, like on the Grand Tour, eg
