Her Legacy | Episode 6 Remembered as “one of the best friends Colorado golf has ever had,” Vivian Dorsey left a lasting impact both through her play and her passion for the game. A standout competitor, Dorsey captured the 1951 CWGA Stroke Play Championship and went on to win an incredible 16 club championships between City Park Golf Course and Wellshire Golf Course, establishing herself as one of Denver’s most accomplished amateur golfers. Her success continued well into her senior years, where she claimed six Colorado Senior Women’s Golf Championship titles and was twice named Senior Woman Golfer of the Year by the Colorado PGA. Dorsey’s contributions to the game extended beyond the scorecard as well. In 1978, she was honored with the YWCA Sportswoman’s Award for Golf, recognizing both her achievements and her role in growing the game. A champion competitor and beloved figure in Colorado golf. Her Legacy | Episode 5 A teenage phenom who rose through perseverance to become one of Colorado’s most dominant champions. Phyllis Buchanan first captured the state’s attention after reaching the CWGA Match Play Championship finals three straight times, each time falling to Ruth Harrison, a competitor more than 30 years her senior. But at just 19 years old, Buchanan broke through — claiming the 1930 CWGA Match Play title and beginning a remarkable run. She would go on to set the record for consecutive CWGA Match Play victories with five straight titles from 1935–1939, cementing her place among Colorado’s greatest amateur golfers. Her success extended beyond the state stage as well. In 1933, Buchanan stepped onto the national scene by winning the prestigious Women’s Trans-Mississippi Championship. Despite her dominance, Buchanan stepped away from competitive golf at just 28 years old, later becoming a champion trap-shooter and bowler — proving her athletic talents extended far beyond the golf course. Her Legacy | Episode 4 A champion competitor, a true all-around athlete, and a powerful advocate for women in sport. Joan Birkland was a force — known not only for her incredible achievements, but for being one of the kindest and most respected figures in Colorado golf. She excelled in both golf and tennis, leaving a lasting impact on the advancement of women in athletics. On the course, she captured four CWGA Match Play titles (1960, 1961, 1962, 1964) and three consecutive Stroke Play championships (1964–66). Her dominance at the club level was unmatched — winning 30 consecutive Denver Country Club women’s championships, an achievement few golfers could ever imagine matching. Beyond competition, Birkland dedicated her life to growing opportunities for women in sport. In 1974, she co-founded Sportswomen of Colorado, an organization created to promote, recognize, and empower girls and women in athletics across the state. A Colorado Sports Hall of Fame inductee and respected golf leader, she served as chair of the USGA Women’s Committee, was a USGA Board member during the 1995 U.S. Women’s Open at The Broadmoor, chaired the 1982 Curtis Cup Matches at Denver Country Club, and officiated at the U.S. Women’s Open at The Broadmoor. Her influence continues to shape opportunities for women in sport today. Her Legacy lives on. Her Legacy | Episode 3 One of the most decorated amateur golfers Colorado has ever produced. Carol Flenniken dominated amateur golf throughout the 1960s, capturing major national and international titles while building a record that would stand for decades. She won the 1960 U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship, and in 1964 became the youngest champion of the British Ladies Amateur at the time — one of the most prestigious titles in amateur golf. Flenniken also represented the United States on the winning 1964 and 1966 Curtis Cup teams, compiling an impressive 6-1-1 record in international competition. Her impact on Colorado golf was historic. With 25 CWGA/CGA titles, she held the record for more than 20 years and was later honored as the CWGA Player of the Century in 2016. Her Legacy | Episode 2 A model amateur and one of the most respected figures in the history of women’s golf. Barbara McIntire built a career defined by excellence, leadership, and service to the game. A two-time U.S. Women’s Amateur champion (1959, 1964) and the 1960 British Ladies Amateur champion, she competed at the highest level of amateur golf for decades. Her international impact was just as impressive — representing the United States on six Curtis Cup teams between 1958–1972 and later captaining the victorious American squads in 1976 and 1998. At just 15 years old, McIntire announced herself to the golf world by defeating six-time champion Glenna Collett Vare in her first U.S. Women’s Amateur match. Beyond competition, she devoted her life to the game through the USGA, eventually receiving its highest honor — the Bob Jones Award in 2000. A champion. A leader. A lifelong ambassador for golf. Her Legacy | Episode 1 Her Legacy begins with a legend. The first woman inducted into the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame in 1973, Mildred “Babe” Zaharias, was a once-in-a-generation athlete. A track and field star, major league baseball pitcher, and one of the most dominant golfers of her era. While living in Colorado, Babe won 17 consecutive tournaments, including the U.S. Women’s Amateur and the British Ladies Amateur. When she returned to Denver, the city welcomed her with a parade and a 200-pound key to the city — with crowds lining the streets to celebrate her incredible achievements. She became the first Colorado-based golfer to receive that level of recognition, putting Colorado women’s golf on the national stage. And her impact still echoes today.
