For more than five decades, he lived an apparently ordinary life. He married, raised a family, worked as a golf professional and car salesman, and avoided the mistakes that often lead fugitives to capture. Despite being one of the longest-running unresolved bank theft cases in U.S. history, he was never arrested. In 2021, as he was dying of lung cancer, Conrad confessed his true identity to his family. Shortly afterward, U.S. Marshals confirmed that Thomas Randele and Theodore Conrad were the same person, finally closing a case that had remained open for 52 years. The story gained renewed attention when Conrad's daughter, Ashley Randele, shared the family secret through the podcast Smoke Screen: My Fugitive Dad. Conrad successfully evaded capture longer than many notorious fugitives. It pays to buy quality tools. One of my auto students was trying to break a flare nut loose with this generic line wrench, and it broke. I gave him my Snap On line wrench from my personal toolbox and it broke it free with no problem. One more reason I always buy quality hand tools.
