Helicopter parenting is just the default now. And people wonder why so many kids are anxious and socially incapable.

@HighHeelEsquire She is THIRTEEN. If she was 16 or 17, yes this would be crazy overbearing. What are they doing at just 13 they donโ€™t want the mom to see? Sheโ€™s too young to be totally unsupervised. I donโ€™t think this is too much at all. Theyโ€™re babies.

@Dropchicken7 I know people in real life who were raised this way. I wasn't, but it's definitely common. It happened when I was a kid (born in 1996) and is getting more common I think. Kids are not going outside

@ComradeQuail No. This is not normal. My eight year old just went to a movie with another family the other day. This is just the internet.

@shilohhh_ I know that in Europe, kids much younger than 12 go places on their own. And I've been to Mexico, and kids on their own there is a common sight

@shilohhh_ It's interesting to me that there's another country that's even stricter than the US on this.

One thing I may do to attempt to survive offshoring and AI is start a developer blog to document experimental/self-education software projects. Seems like a good thing to do while I'm still employed. I might purge my old posts and rebrand this page if I do that.

Phone and tablet cameras are still dog shit compared to professional cameras, or just pro-sumer level cameras, most people just have never used one so they have no idea. It's still the case that equipment is not much of a barrier to photography. Practice is.
avahgaar@avahgaar

Cheap yet HQ cameras everywhere (in phones & tablets) make photography/videography accessible to many; the gatekeeping game of photographers with fancy ass equipment is now gone. Similarly, AI will smash away the made-up barrier for non-tech folks to build stuff themselves.

With AI people act like the code doesn't matter. They'll even say that. Or they'll say "coding isn't the hard part". I bet they thought the code doesn't matter before, too. That's why so much software sucks. I'm still scared AI will replace me. But code does matter.

It's token hungry as hell, barely faster than hand coding, and you don't get a feel for the code base doing it. Targeted LLM use is much better. I'd rather hand code, I'd rather vibe code and produce whatever junk the llm thinks is good.

AI coding tools are obviously useful now. No doubt. That said, I think "Spec driven development" and stuff like the BMAD method takes too long. I predict either the models get good enough you don't need it, or it goes out of style. No matter how good reddit guys say it is.

@ziastupidposts There will be some big data leaks and exploits I'm sure. There was already the AI caused AWS shut down that caused them to decide all PRs have to be reviewed by senior engineers. Which, I doubt that fixes the problem.

@ziastupidposts BMAD specifically takes so long that it feels like it's not much faster than hand writing stuff, and it's definitely less fun than "vibe coding" where you just have the AI randomly write stuff. Tedium.

@ziastupidposts My personal feeling is that AI is the most useful, and the most enjoyable to use, when it's used in a targeted way. Specific functions, helping with understanding problems, etc. But the trend is BMAD and having the agents write entire apps that you then review, which sucks.
