It’s David Attenborough’s 98th birthday today and I was lucky enough to meet him on a habitat conservation project last year. My mum had met him a few years earlier and had always held it over me, so it was mainly just a relief to get even with her!

@CreeAnt @theroyalparks Society has used “queerness” to mean “unnatural” or “other”. If we apply those same judgements to nature, then many plants and non-human animals could also be considered “queer”. Of course, woodlice are not queer, it’s a construct. But it asks us to think what is “natural”.

@ConnorButler @theroyalparks The natural world is amazing, fascinating, mysterious & wonderful. But in what sense is it ‘queer’? Surely that’s an entirely human construct? Not to mention one which many gay people find offensive.

Where possible we leave standing dead wood and fallen timber in @theroyalparks as it's essential for the lifecycle of many invertebrates. We've also been building loggeries to provide habitat for Stag Beetles thanks to players of @PostcodeLottery. Dead wood is good!

It's been sad to see so many trees fall during the storm, but the death of one tree can be the beginning of life for countless other tiny forms. We made a video about why deadwood is good and why we should leave it in our parks and gardens youtube.com/watch?v=MtYg2K…
