On this day in 1968 Flt lt Alan Pollock flew through the upper span of Tower Bridge in demonstration against the Labour Government’s failure to mark the 50th anniversary of the RAF’s formation and in protest against cuts to the RAF from the 1957 White Paper. Having circled the Houses of Parliament three times Pollock flew through the span before making low inverted passes of three further RAF airfields. The RAF medically discharged him to avoid the embarrassment of a court martial highlighting why he had carried out the stunt. One wonders what Flt Lt Pollock would have done today in response to the forthcoming Defence Investment Plan.
