A rare Victorian gem and one of the oldest surviving films of London. Shot in Hampstead Village on this day, 8th March 1896. It captures people arriving on their bicycles and horses and being welcomed by a gentleman in a top hat.

How do we create streets that are good for places & for people, supportive of more homes & can actually get adopted. Come to our latest lunchtime webinar to find out. It’s literally a free intellectual lunch as you munch your sandwich! What have you got to lose? Most council’s housing targets have doubled. NPPF updates have introduced new transport rules: vision-led planning, changing parking standards, continuous pavement references, placemaking guidance & pavement parking bans. Pressure on local authorities to deliver more & better housing schemes has never been higher. Yet, housing & transport remain trapped in separate silos, despite being two sides of the same coin. This fragmentation creates conflict at the finish line, where planning visions clash with technical adoption standards, leading to delays, cost increases & compromised street quality. Every single time. Car domination makes city centres poorer not more prosperous. The data is very consistent. You don’t necessarily need to or should ban them, but you do need to put people first in all or nearly all streets.

When in 2007 the mayor of #Ljubljana proposed to close 12 hectares of its city center to private cars, just 40% of residents approved. A decade later, no less than 97% were against reopening to motor traffic: “None of us can really imagine cars ever staging a comeback”.
