(Don’t get me wrong, the trip to Amsterdam was all in all really fun and successful, our group was able to help around 150 pigeons by removing the strings from their feet and I got some great photos out of it too but man, some people just make me wanna become a hermit for real)

Like how hard can it be, just maybe consider other people are also just people with very normal human limits before dumping all the responsibilities onto their shoulders without even asking, or assuming they don’t care just because they couldn’t take in another bird immediately

The number one reason that sometimes makes me wanna quit the pigeon rescue volunteering for good is other animal rescuers. 🙃 I’m too tired to even get into some of the crap that people spouted these past couple days but MAN, why can’t people just get over themselves for once

@ShriekingNoises No, in Hannover we don’t usually have herons hang around the markets waiting to be thrown some fish scraps, it was quite a bizarre scene to witness

@Solar_Supern0va Yes, but that’s Columba Livia pigeons, aka rock doves. This is Columba Palumbus, aka the wood pigeon, which has never been domesticated. They don’t have the same instincts towards humans at all.

@CrowFangs I meann people keep pigeons. Humans used to use them for ww2 to deliver letters. And then we abandoned them :[

@Solar_Supern0va That’d be both illegal and cruel though, and most likely he would’ve died within weeks. They’re wild animals, just being kept in a cage is oftentimes so stressful for them that they barely eat, I had to tube feed him too Beautiful birds, but best left where they belong, really.

Aaah, tomorrow I’m going to Amsterdam for the weekend, I’m so stressed over everything and nothing though cause I haven’t really gone travelling since… 2020 I think?! Anyway we’re gonna be catching and destringing pigeons all over the city centre, come say hi if you’re around.

@TanjaGamercat2 Naja das Gebäude war aber auch sehr doof gebaut leider. Schöne tolle Glaskuppel wo die Vögel denken dass sie da raus können und dann hat man den Salat. War auch nicht das erste Opfer, ne tote Krähe lag da wohl auch schon oben rum. 🙃

@CrowFangs 🤞 Vögel sind manchmal etwas doof wenn sie den Ausgang nicht finden 😅

@mikerainham Took the poor guy about a week to reach the minimum weight for release, if they weigh less than 400gr their chances are pretty slim out there. It weighed only 350gr when it was freed last week.

@mikerainham Yeah this one was a bit more tricky, the first 24 hours it needed multiple infusions and only a few ml of very watery formula before it was even stable enough to digest normal food. Then it was on a diet of 50% seeds and 50% formula with extra nutrients.

@mikerainham I wasn’t the one who caught it, but let’s just say after almost a week of being trapped, it was more than happy to follow a trail of corn and was barely able to put up anything of a fight anymore when our vet grabbed it. It was so weak it could barely stand upright anymore even.

@CrowFangs How did you manage to capture it in the shopping mall?, they are quite skittish. Yeah nothing for them in the mall, in fact they would do worse than a feral pigeon who will peck at discarded food crumbs in near the food outlets. Wood pigeons rely on natural sources.

Today we rescued a different kind of critter. Saw this little guy from a distance and immediately knew something wasn’t right. He’s with an experienced hedgehog rescue now thankfully.

@ZoeMartell1 Yeah he absolutely needed it, he’s basically just barely above critical condition, without help he would’ve been dead in a day or two for sure. Now he’s at least got a chance.

Hooray, after I don’t know how many years today I finally got confirmation that my crippling headaches are in fact migraines and should be treated accordingly and I shouldn’t just be left to self medicate with caffeine, painkillers, ice water and the occasional bit of dark magic

@ThatPitaya @ishtar_doves Wing twitching can be both playful and a warning, they especially do it when they’re on a nest they’re protecting or when they’re cornered (like in a carrier box). Depends on the circumstance and rest of the body language usually.

@ishtar_doves Wing twitching is usually playful behavior tho right? I imagine she just sees you as a really big pigeon so she tries really hard to impress you

My Mallory will tug and peck my fingers and have twitchy wings, but doesn't wing slap? Is she playing with me?

@ishtar_doves Yeah like, I get it, some people do keep birds that are so heavily disabled that euthanasia might be a kindness but who’re we to judge from just a short clip or two seen on the internet? I guess they mean well but honestly there are so many better ways to actually help animals
