Should I stay or should I go now? Seriously considering leaving this platform for good. What do you think? It used to be very useful for exchanging with fellow energy geeks, share the latest research and follow policy developments. Many good people here have left or don't engage anymore. It is a lot less useful now. Most of the engagement I get now is anonymous and faceless accounts that all have the same content in their timelines: covid conspiracy, climate denial, far right messages, anti trans people propaganda - the list goes on. I have built a very strong following now on LinkedIn and my following on Bluesky, Mastodon and Threads continues to grow.

NEW: IT'S NOT JUST THE UK! 🟢The UK is 14th OECD country to become coal-free. 🟢OECD coal power falls to less than HALF of its peak in 2007. 🟢All but 5 OECD countries have seen falls of at least 30% from peak coal power (lovely dataviz from @C_BruceLockhart) 🧵

UK was birthplace of the industrial revolution, 1st major nation to use coal power over 140 years ago. It is now the first major nation to quit it This is the culmination of civil society pushing and action going back to 2006. Well done to all involved france24.com/en/europe/2024…

At the end of this month, coal power generation in England ENDS after 142 years. This is effectively the conclusion of the Industrial Revolution 🇬🇧 My dear friend @RobBurnett92 and I will treat X to an informative thread on the evolution from Holborn Viaduct to last one standing

Today @ETC_energy published our briefing note on #BuildingGrids Faster: the Backbone of the Energy Transition. Power grids are a critical enabler of global decarbonisation, linking electricity generation to its uses. Under net-zero scenarios, the total length of grids must grow by over 50% by 2050 – a $22.5 trillion investment. To fast-track grid build and deliver the transition at the pace and scale required, policymakers and industry must implement a strategic vision for grids and address key bottlenecks. Good news: After getting off to a late start in the energy transition, Poland is making up for lost time. Over the first 7 months of 2024, renewables comprised 30.2% of electricity - nearly double the levels seen just three years ago. theprogressplaybook.com/2024/08/27/pol…

Less than a decade ago, new coal plants were springing up everywhere in Asia and beyond.. ..it was impossible to think how Turkey, Vietnam Indonesia, Phillipines, Bangladesh, Pakistan, S Africa +more would stop building. But they did.👏 It's just down to 2 countries now🇨🇳🇮🇳

It's difficult to overstate just how quickly battery storage capacity is growing in the U.S. We've added 384% more storage capacity this year than we did through the first 5 months of 2023. 🧵

Electricity grid congestion isn't just an issue we're grappling with here in the UK - volumes of power involved in remedial actions to manage congestion rose 14% (to 57TWh) in the EU last year. New capacity and flexibility is the answer. buff.ly/3W9jyFs

Wind power is pushing out coal in the UK, as its last remaining coal plant is set to close in October 🌪️ In 2023, UK coal generation was about 30x lower than in 2013 - now making up just 1.4% of the UK’s electricity mix. More insights in #GER24: ember-climate.org/insights/resea…
