Many previous ones are potentially at locations where they are a root to mantle plumes that cause volcanism at the surface (e.g. for Hawaii, Iceland, Galapagos, Samoa). This one seems a bit of a loner and potentially not connected.

The blob is about the width of Iceland, and only about 10 km in height. Previous ones we found were about 20 km, and we needed to go to higher frequency observations to map this thinner one.

The boundary between the core and the mantle, 3000 km deep, is scattered with island/blobs of strange material. In this study, @CarlMartin_ uses seismic waves to image one of these beneath the mid Pacific. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
