Analyzing Every Group - FIFA WORLD CUP 2026 ⚽️™️
GROUP K
Portugal 🇵🇹 - Euros 2016 champions, currently ranked 5th in the world, they are coming into the World Cup as overwhelming favorites for most football fans. Reasons being they have been in terrific form lately, with 3 out of 3 wins in recent friendlies, scoring six goals and conceding just twice, but most importantly they boast arguably the best midfield in the whole tournament with PSG’s back-to-back champions league winning dynamic midfield duo of Joao Neves and Vitinha, and premier league assist record breaker and player of the season, Bruno Fernandes. However, the massive attention on Portugal is undoubtedly on the 5-time Balon D’or winner and national team captain, Cristiano Ronaldo, who had an outstanding season with Al Nassr, winning the Saudi Pro League. You see despite having Ronaldo, Portugal haven’t made it to the semifinals of the World Cup since 2006, in fact they have made it past the round of 16 just once (Qatar 2022), but this year presents their best chance of ever winning the World Cup in the last 20 years. Not only do they have arguably the best midfielders, they also boasts arguably the best full backs in the entire tournament in PSG’s star left back, Nuno Mendes, and Al Hilal’s flying right back, Joao Cancelo, who had a terrific season on loan at Barcelona winning them the La Liga title. It would be the crowning moment on a stellar career if Portugal can win the World Cup this time around and for the first time ever, with Ronaldo getting his hands on the one trophy that has eluded him to make him one of, and arguably the greatest player to ever grace the sport.
Colombia 🇨🇴 - 2024 Copa America runners up and ranked 14th, they are the second highest ranked team in this group. They finished 3rd in South America World Cup qualifiers while creating more chances (51) than any other team including Argentina. They however also missed the most chances (31) and conceded the most goals (18) amongst all the teams that qualified from South America, which could also be a weakness in their play. With in-form players like Luis Diaz (Bayern Munich 🇩🇪), who won a Bundesliga and DFB Pokal double, Luis Suarez (Sporting CP 🇵🇹), who scored 28 goals in the Liga Portugal, and Ricardo Rios (Benfica), who was instrumental for Benfica in midfield going the whole season unbeaten, you wouldn’t put it past Colombia to give Portugal a run for their money in this group and go deep into the tournament.
DR Congo 🇨🇩 - Appearing in the World Cup for the first time since 1974, formerly known as Zaire, they are currently ranked 45th in the world. Despite their not so impressive FIFA rankings and qualifying for the World Cup only through the intercontinental playoffs after beating Nigeria on penalties in the Afcon playoffs, DR Congo have been very impressive in their progression in football in recent years, finishing 4th in Afcon 2023, and narrowly losing out to former champions Algeria in the round of 16 after drawing against eventual “tournament winners”, Senegal in this year’s Afcon. They are known for their defensive style of play, with players like Chancel Mbemba (Lille 🇫🇷 ), Aaron Wan-Bissaka (West Ham), and Axel Tuanzebe (Burnley), making it very difficult for tougher opponents to score against them. They will surely prove to be a very difficult team to beat in this group.
Uzbekistan 🇺🇿 - World Cup debutants and ranked 50th, they are undoubtedly the underdogs in this group. However, they have in their ranks one of the most impressive young defenders in world football right now, Manchester City defender Abdukodir Khusanov. And with former world champion and Balon D’or winner, Italy legend Fabio Cannavaro as their coach, it makes them harder to beat while playing a solid back 5 in defence, while striker Eldor Shomurodov brings a goal threat after a prolific season for Turkish Super Lig club, Istanbul Basaksehir, as their top goalscorer with 22 goals.

🗣️ "The primary DR Congo vs Portugal pick is centered on Portugal's ability to establish control from the very beginning. DR Congo’s path to the tournament was challenging, requiring extra time to overcome Jamaica in the playoffs. Their preparation was limited to just two friendly matches, neither of which resulted in a victory. This lack of readiness will be a major obstacle against a European powerhouse like Portugal. Roberto Martinez’s squad, in contrast, enjoyed a solid preparation window with victories over the USA, Chile, and Nigeria. They understand the importance of securing an early lead to manage the game effectively. Expect Portugal to apply pressure from the opening whistle, aiming to score in the first half to neutralize DR Congo's defensive strategy. With Cristiano Ronaldo having scored 62 of his 142 international goals in the first half, the team possesses the firepower to take an early lead and hold it." -@ActionNetworkHQ
