@manilalunarcat @Shinuki1992 I'm looking at the Tokyo Anime Center exhibition for this but what does it prove? It opens today but is it really important? The Vtuber stuff with Sameko Saba they're also doing had more excitement.

The passion-project angle is actually a point in favor of the show, not against it. Kameda and the core staff loved the manga enough to push for the remake even during COVID. But passion projects still have to perform to get greenlit for more. Yaiba did: steady 2.3–3.1% Kanto family ratings in a competitive kids slot, confirmed S2 with those same core staff, and a month-long Tokyo Anime Center exhibition. For a niche 90s retro revival aimed at kids and families, those are the metrics that matter. Dismissing all of them as “planned anyway” just keeps moving the goalposts.

@manilalunarcat @Shinuki1992 I've seen super unsuccessful anime get 2nd seasons, its not a big risk anymore. They're already halfway through the manga, another 2 cour season would finish it. You keep repeating those 2 points but you didn't prove anything with the point of ratings since others have done it too

@manilalunarcat @Shinuki1992 You're only using 1 positive signal tho. S2 and the exhibition were planned ahead. Can you even consider the work of one of Japan's most successful mangaka niche? Yoshimichi Kameda is a huge fan of Yaiba and wanted to work on it with the core staff. Why would they not stay?

It's not moving the goalposts to point out that S2 confirmation + steady ratings + exhibition are positive signals for a niche kids revival. SugoiiLITE's pre-air tease and the official announcement both confirm a 2-cour run (24 episodes) was planned. That's standard for many adaptations, but it doesn't erase the fact that the committee still chose to continue with the project with season 2 with the same core staff after seeing the actual broadcast performance. The real metrics that matter for this Saturday family slot are live Kanto household ratings (Yaiba held 2.3–3.1%), family engagement, and whether it justifies continuation...which it did. BD collector sales remain a niche hobbyist number that the target audience (kids) doesn't buy. The show is performing adequately for what it is: loud retro shonen fun, not a mainstream blockbuster. If every positive signal gets dismissed as "it was planned anyway," then nothing would ever count as success.

@manilalunarcat @Shinuki1992 How is that moving the goalpost? Why would they remake a series if they didn't plan to do it completely? SugoiLITE said that it was S1(??) before it aired, teasing that a 2nd one was coming. They also made a Tiktok, wonder what their target was🤔. Show me more metrics of success.

Saying “S2 was pretty much planned from the start” to dismiss the confirmation is still moving the goalposts. Not every show in the Gosho Aoyama Hour slot automatically gets a full continuation with the same core staff intact. Yaiba did; plus steady 2.3–3.1% Kanto ratings and a month-long Tokyo Anime Center exhibition. For a niche 90s revival aimed at kids and families, that’s a solid green light, not an automatic default. Pretending otherwise just keeps shifting the metric every time a positive signal appears.

@manilalunarcat @Shinuki1992 S2 was pretty much planned from the start, likely a full adaptation. Another thing about the timeslot is that the majority of anime there get a 2nd season and most have 2 cours like Time Bokan, Ace Attorney, Yashahime and Mix. Love All Play and Hakushon Daimao being exceptions

Yes, many shows in the Gosho Aoyama Hour/Saturday evening family slot get steady ratings , and that's exactly why it's a good, stable timeslot for this kind of content. The point isn't that Yaiba broke records. The point is that it held steady in a competitive family slot (2.3–3.1% Kanto), got a confirmed Season 2 with core staff, and has a month-long Tokyo Anime Center exhibition. Those are positive signals for a niche 90s revival aimed at kids, not a mainstream blockbuster. Dismissing those indicators because "other shows also did okay" is still moving the goalposts. Success for Yaiba isn't "bigger than MHA": it's performing adequately for its actual target demographic and getting greenlit for more. If every show in the slot is "average," then Yaiba is successfully average for what it is: loud retro shonen fun for families.

@manilalunarcat @Shinuki1992 So if it does almost exactly the same as its predecessors in that timeslot, what determines if its more successful than them? Ao no Miburo S1&2, Firefighter Daigo, and even Hakushon Daimao 2020 also held steady ratings and at times even did better. MHA is biggest standout from it

Saying that all anime that gets shown in that time slot gets good ratings so it doesn't count is a dishonest take. Yaiba held steady 2.3–3.1% Kanto household ratings across its run (e.g. 3.1% early episodes, 2.7% later), which is solid for a Saturday 17:30 kids/family timeslot on NTV. That’s the primary metric for this kind of broadcast show(live family viewership and real time SNS engagement on Japanese X)not just streaming numbers or Western social media hype. BD collector sales are a niche hobbyist thing in 2026; they don’t define success for a retro shonen revival aimed at kids. The show already has S2 confirmed with core staff, plus a month-long Tokyo Anime Center exhibition. It’s performing as expected for its actual target demographic.

@SkylinWill @yuujiforsukuna Let's forget about the 20+ anime they worked on between YoI to CSM for a second. The director Sayo Yamamoto has not worked on anything in years and has basically disappeared. She was also credited for series composition, writing, and was one of the original creators.

@yuujiforsukuna I am not saying MAPPA didn't choose what's best for themselves, but they made that choice for themselves at the expense of the YoI fans they made a promise to and who have been hoping and waiting for many years Hence why, I think YoI fans are in their right to be upset with them

MAPPA had a choice. Accept the initially agreed upon profit % and deliver on their initial promise to the fans that saved them from bankruptcy. Or go after the projects that land a higher profit for them. They chose the later, a business choice - but still a betrayal ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
🐯🌹花傲天🚨🐉Gasai Yukki🐈‍⬛@yuujiforsukuna

Can these people read? The committee is the one who benefits the most, not Mappa...!! you guys are still stupid to blame Mappa instead of Avex lmfao It is clear that Mappa will want to adapt Yoi if it gets a profit that is not underpaid lmfao. Mappa doesn't want to go bankrupt!

@Amano_news This seems like the best KHR has looked. Its been bugging me for a while but none of the official sources look particularly good except now for this Abema screenshot. Crunchyroll's resolution is too low and Remow's(seemingly the BD version) is oversaturated.

@RedDecimo While the staff matters most, I think Production IG and Wit Studio would fit best. They've both made anime with Akira Amano's original characters designs and were well animated. Masayoshi Tanaka is seemingly still the character designer based on the 20th anniversary art.

Probably a reach and might not happen but I personally think Studio Sunrise would've been PERFECT for Hitman Reborn Gintama's comedy could compliment Reborn's humour well and the high quality Gundam Animations for Reborn's fights (HM: Production IG, David Productions, Ufotable)

You'd think a manga with an insanely detailed power system, long fights, and slow releases like World Trigger would've eventually fallen off but it's still ridiculously popular. That's how good it is.

@chromat1cfire Nah, imagine that for other anime. Demon Slayer, JJK, FMA and other top, popular anime use it but they would lose a huge part of their charm without those scenes. The serious scenes hit even harder because of the contrast at times. Would've also seemed less edgy to some people.

Nakashige's biggest W. SL in an anime format as a much more grounded and serious series helps develop the story more. In the manhwa everything felt very humorous, exaggeratedly. Even where it didn't need those kinds of humors.

Slight addendum to Note 1 is that it's usually certain studios that are on the production committees. KyoAni, MAPPA (in recent years), SHAFT, Pierrot, etc. are usually a part of their series' committees. Pierrot is even on the committee to works they don't produce (i.e. YozaFam)

People on this app don't seem to understand how anime production works, so here's an overall bigger picture at how it works. Not as detailed/accurate as it can be, but it's fundamentals an anime fan should know imo. (corrected repost) (1/2) #OnePunchMan #onepunchmanseason3

@JustsomeSpaceG1 They didn't fumble anything. With Magi and 7DS, A-1 was just tasked with animating while their parent company Aniplex funded and took the biggest earnings as the top of the production committee. For Fairy Tail, A-1 was on the production committee but we're not making enough.

@Diivision123 TV Tokyo. They're the main producers of the anime and rank higher than Pierrot on the production committee. As such, they make the decisions, including episode count, and take most of the profit.

@Gabisu_narusawa @l1ghtDesign Pretty standard for that timeslot. I think it needs more than TV rankings cuz its doing as well as Ao no Miburo, Firefighter Daigo: Rescuer in Orange, Yashahime, Hakusho Daimao 2020, and Love All Play which aired in the same timeslot. Its TV rankings are being carried by Conan

@Aizawa_aiminn @nineethdeath That's why I said its not as drastic, but both were the faces of their respective franchises at a time. Nishio has his idiosyncrasies that can be seen even in the past but he was also more flexible. Kishimoto's style was influenced by Nishio but you wouldn't be able to tell now.

@Aizawa_aiminn @nineethdeath I'm sorry but he is. Its not as drastic as someone like Tadayoshi Yamamuro for Dragon Ball but his designs have his worst qualities nowadays and he doesn't try to have a middle ground with the source material's designs. Incredible animator but his CD's and AD work have been poor.
