Colman Domingo is excellent as Joe Jackson in #MichaelMovie. I’m truly so impressed. A reminder that @colmandomingo was just outstanding in the 2023 release Sing Sing, which rightfully earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Domingo’s in Steven Spielberg’s new film too.

There’s a moment in the last third of #Michael (🌟🌟🌟)where Jaafar Jackson, stepping in the shoes of his uncle, performs Human Nature to a sold out Dodger Stadium. In this moment, you feel Michael Jackson’s spirit come alive through Jaafar. I don’t think it’s possible for Jaafar Jackson to have given a better performance. Jaafar becomes Michael. And I say this as a protector of Michael Jackson’s music, as one of the biggest fans of MJ’s catalog in the world (YouTube literally notified me last month that I am in the .05% of Michael Jackson listeners). All of that said, Jaafar Jackson is the reason you should see this movie.  Like most people, I have a love/hate relationship with music biopics. When done right, music biopics can really mean something  (see Ray, Walk the Line and Amadeus- although heavily fictionalized). When done wrong, I can’t think of anything much worse (see Bohemian Rhapsody, All Eyez on Me, or last year’s Bruce Springsteen biopic Deliver Me From Nowhere.) While we live in a world where polarized opinions carry the day & make news, I regret to inform you that Michael falls somewhere in the middle of the music biopic sliding scale. No, this is not one of the best biopics I’ve ever seen. It’s also far from one of the worst. The truth is this is Michael is just a quality film that I think is definitely worthy of a trip to the theater.  I’ll start with some of the things I think this movie should’ve done better. I’ll be the first to admit that the screenplay is this film’s weak link. I don’t think the story built out enough conflict here & relied heavily on Michael’s torn relationship with his father & former manager Joseph, played beautifully by Colman Domingo. I think there was room here to make the story more interesting & to add more friction to Michael’s life other than just his ups & downs with his father. So much happened during MJ’s life- even before 1990- that I felt like this movie could’ve added more tension.  But despite a weak screenplay, the reason Michael is worthy of a trip to the theater is two-fold: the music & Jaafar. It’s really that simple. The Michael Jackson estate strictly controls the use of MJ’s music. You don’t see songs from Thriller or Bad randomly popping in car commercials or trailers for films for a reason. That’s why when you hear Michael’s music deployed in a film, on the big screen, with surround sound- it has such a profound impact. From start to finish, this entire film is lathered with hits from the Jackson 5, Off the Wall, Thriller and Bad. I think director Antonie Fuqua, the same man who directed Training Day, was smart to realize that the key to this film’s success is to make it about the music, whether it be Michael performing the music or writing it.  Then there’s Jaafar. Throughout each stage of Michael’s adult life, Jaafar captures MJ’s physical mannerisms to utter perfection- including & especially when he’s dancing. The dance sequences and the live performances are mesmerizing- they’re filled with so much energy. There are multiple stretches throughout the back half of this film where Jaafar is performing songs from Thriller where it’s hard to tell the difference between Jaafar and Michael. Even Jaafar’s voice sounded like Michael’s. To step into the shoes of a man who is not only your uncle but one of the most famous humans to ever walk this planet comes with so much pressure. Jaafar carried that pressure with poise & grace. A moment that really stood out & that I think I’ll hold onto is Jaafar recreating the music video for Thriller. The entire remaking of that video was one of the best parts of the film & was so endearing. Jaafar really handled this performance with care.  At the end of the day, my positive response to this film is largely emotional, and I have no problem admitting that. I totally understand if some more buttoned up critics take issue with the story or screenplay. But I am not one of those critics.
