I went to college in Rocky Mount, NC in 1969. A carton of cigarettes was $1.90. The cigarette machine in our dorm cost $0.20 a pack and there was a penny taped to the side of the pack. Smoking was allowed in the classroom if you sat in the back of the room. Often the proffessor joined us for a smoke.

I remember buying cartons of Marlboro Reds for less than $10.
