Colleen Schmidt published a paper from her undergrad thesis! @TroyBaisden @bntecology More light: In one of the Hawaii sites from our @ESAMonographs paper, @ColleenBSchmid1 found that understory species down-regulated #Nfix more at low than high light: besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.11…. Would be great to look at CO2 too. I'd love to hear more about Coriaria/Fiordlands!

@TroyBaisden Great question! We haven't manipulated CO2 yet, but one possibility is that it has the same effect as light, through photosynthesis. @bntecology found that Pentaclethra macroloba looked facultative at low light but downregulated incompletely at high light: nature.com/articles/s4147…

In this new paper we used a field experiment to test the hypothesis. Surprisingly, we found that all six N-fixing symbioses we studied (the two main temperate tree species in the USA and four tropical species) sustained high rates of N fixation even when soil N was sufficient.

Previously (esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.18… and elsewhere) we had hypothesized that symbiotic N-fixing trees in higher latitudes fixed N at similar rates regardless of soil N supply, whereas those at lower latitudes turned fixation off when soil N supply was sufficient.
