📣 Excited to share this new paper with @pnbeymer! Text linked in quoted post / coming out soon in JXE!

🚨 New paper! @ECAllen and I look at students' motivational beliefs across a semester of stats. We compared individual students fluctuations to the course averages. Takeaways: students rarely resemble the class average. More within-person studies needed! tinyurl.com/v8s43mdv

@Jaylene_Patt I think this is pretty common right now, unfortunately! You have all your under review stuff on your CV, though, right? I felt like that was taken into consideration when I was on the market last year! It still shows that you’re getting stuff all the way through the process :)

@jarlogan Hi there! This still sounds like such a cool workshop - I was moving when it was offered the first time! 😣 do grant ideas have to be for NIH funding to be accepted? (Also thanks for the welcome message in Power! But somehow it always overlaps with other ECR stuff :/)

@Jaylene_Patt Hi Jaylene, unfortunately this isn’t my area of expertise! Maybe you could tag relevant AERA/APA sub-groups to see if someone else has any insight!

@Jaylene_Patt Honestly, I’d probably find a different journal! I definitely wouldn’t just submit and hope for the best, as others have mentioned. Contacting the editor is a worthwhile first step, but after that I’d consider looking elsewhere before trying to cut so much. Good luck!

@LMalloy Oh I just did it myself because I love it here so much. My school is on the quarter system so we don’t start until end of September. And right now it’s on the shoulder season for hiking, etc. so prices are incredibly reasonable.

Why stress about finishing your summer writing goals at home when you can stress write with a view? Super lucky to have such a magnificent “office” for the next few weeks.

@CaseyJ_edu Oof. That’s really rough! Sorry to hear that :/ My department actually added to the university standard and gave me some money to look. But I definitely still did not have a good idea of how much I should have been asking for, and it’s costing us a *lot* out of pocket 😣

Advice to academic folks on the job market: ask for more moving money. It’s stupid expensive to move cross-country and the quote they give you may be woefully inaccurate…😣 #AcademicChatter

@ECAllen @AERA_MotSIG @APADivision15 I'll keep thinking - I have so much to say on this topic! But in the meantime: one thing I suggest doing right now is writing down all the things you appreciated/didn't appreciate as a grad student from an mentoring perspective. You'll lose your grad student perspective quickly!

New faculty question: What best practices do you follow as an advisor for grad students? Wondering about this from both a student support and lab productivity perspective. Bonus points for sharing resources - your own or otherwise! Thanks in advance!! @AERA_MotSIG @APADivision15

@MaryEDozier1 @AERA_MotSIG @APADivision15 Totally worth mentioning! I have a small one for project tracking. I also like the idea of a big one for discussions, too - we had this when I did a research stay at UZH and I found it super helpful, especially when discussing ideas / theorizing!

@ECAllen @AERA_MotSIG @APADivision15 This might sound overly simplistic, but I have a whiteboard in my office where I track projects and otherwise I jot down my "don't forget to ask about" items on sticky notes that I keep with my personal to-do list. I also know virtual tracking apps can be good for a bigger team!

@andrewatawfik @AERA_MotSIG @APADivision15 @ticktick 1. That’s a great idea! Do students have any responsibilities in terms of prepping for / sharing at your meeting? 2. I appreciate the tangible resource! 3. Is it tough to keep up with this piece? Or just becomes routine over time? Thanks for your ideas!!

@MaryEDozier1 @AERA_MotSIG @APADivision15 I definitely like the standing meeting! I know that was always reassuring to me as a student. Do you use any docs to track progress / identify meeting topics ahead of time? I’ve been considering doing something along these lines, so would love to know what’s worked for you!

@ECAllen @AERA_MotSIG @APADivision15 I like to have standing meeting times with the understanding that they can be moved around and don’t have to take up the full time. I find it’s nice to have a guaranteed time (every week or two weeks) to touch base in person.

Fellow motivation scientists: do you know of any papers examining within-person variation in motivation (eg., using diary/EMA)? Bonus if it’s any form of intrinsic motivation (from any theory), but *anything* showing that motivation fluctuates over time would be helpful. Thanks!

@jacasiegel Didn’t elope, but had a super small (immed. family only) wedding during Covid. Loved that nothing was rushed or overwhelming & having time with family. Had a bigger reception later & mostly regretted that - I can barely tell you what happened. Definitely not worth the money!

Question for folks who eloped (whether or not you had a reception after): What did you love about your elopement? What do you wish you had done differently? Do you have any regrets about your decision?
