📢📄We are delighted to announce a new paper by Professor of Law and Regulation of AI, @IgnacioCofone, now forthcoming in the University of Toronto Law Journal. In Consent, Design, and Deceit: A Bottom-up Proposal for Regulating Dark Patterns, Professor Cofone and his coauthor examine how privacy law’s overreliance on individual consent has incentivised the proliferation of deceptive design practices known as “dark patterns”, which manipulate individuals into making unintended decisions by eliciting largely meaningless expressions of consent. 📄 We’re delighted to share a new article by our Director of Research at the Institute for Ethics in AI, Dr Caroline Emmer De Albuquerque Green, published in The Lancet Healthy Longevity. The paper, “Responsible use of AI in the provision of long-term care for older people: a care-centric approach,” challenges dominant narratives that frame AI primarily as a solution to workforce shortages and efficiency pressures in long-term care. While automation may offer benefits, the authors argue that narrow problem-solving approaches risk overlooking the ethical and relational complexities of care systems, potentially compromising care quality. Instead, the article advances a care-centric framework grounded in co-production and human rights, and proposes a definition of responsible AI in long-term care to guide future policy and practice. 🔗 Read the article: sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Last week, Professor of Law and Regulation of AI at the Institute for Ethics in AI, @IgnacioCofone, delivered the annual lecture of the Centre for Business Law and Practice at the University of Leeds. In his talk, “How AI Requires Rebuilding Data Protection Law,” Professor Cofone explored how modern AI systems challenge the traditional foundations of data protection. The lecture highlighted why existing consent-based frameworks may no longer be sufficient, and why data protection law must increasingly focus on constraining harmful inferences and addressing real social impacts of data practices. 📢 We are delighted to welcome Dr. Anelia Kurteva as an Academic Visitor at Institute for Ethics. Anelia is an Assistant Professor in Computer Science at the University of Birmingham, The UK. Prior to that, she was a senior postdoc at Department of Informatics, King’s College London and at TU Delft, The Netherlands. Anelia's research lies at the intersection of the Semantic Web, Privacy and Human-Computer Interaction domains and explores how ontologies and knowledge graphs can be utilised to enable more responsible data management and governance as a backbone for trustworthy AI.

Professor @yuvalshany1 has continued the global conversation on AI governance with a lecture tour across Southeast Asia this January, presenting his white paper on a proposed international AI bill of human rights at leading institutions in Japan, Singapore, and South Korea.
