Young athlete: “I don’t like to train in-season.” LeBron James: ✔️ Lifts ON game days ✔️ Focuses on full body lifts (gives scheduling flexibility) ✔️ Rules to help him decide WHEN to lift based on schedule ✔️ He does something gym related daily

We talked about the consistency of lifting/training year round this week in class as we begin phase 2. “When something becomes normal, then there isn’t abnormal.” As I get older as a highschool strength coach, over 20 years now. There are always two facts when I think of “THE GREAT ONES” when it comes to athletes. 1. They were consistent 2. They know what it takes Show up. Work. Listen. Attend. Intent. Coachable. Be Present. Effort. Keep learning. However you want to phrase it or put it on a shirt. Those three “phrases” are very simple but very hard, AND ITS THE WAY.

As an AD, I implemented a strength program where every athlete lifts in season with their current team. I challenged coaches to scientifically prove it was not beneficial. No one could. It eliminated the tug of war over athletes and reinforced what we believe.

If you want to MAKE plays, then don’t miss practice, workouts, extra reps, meals, film, etc.. As Navy Seals say ”Under pressure you don’t rise to the occasion. You sink to the level of your training.” You don’t fall victim to pressure. You fall victim to your lack of preparation!

How do we get so many 7-8th graders to lifts? Because the sport coaches tell them to and show up! Remember coaches… It’s MY job to program and train your kids. It’s YOUR job to push them to workouts and show up as well. It’s a dual partnership!
