A recent systematic review found that refracture rates in older adults with hip fractures are reduced with pharmacological treatment, especially when initiated through an FLS. This review of 60 studies published between 2010 and 2024 found that:

• Bisphosphonates were the most common pharmacological intervention, followed by anabolic agents and other antiresorptive agents. • The refracture rate was 10% in patients who did not receive pharmacological treatment, compared to 4% in those who did.

A position statement published in JBMR Plus highlights the urgent need to rethink how healthcare professionals and services approach osteoporosis care, moving from the “treatment gap” to the personalized osteoporosis “care gap.”
