Back in 1920, a Cape-based horticulturist named Harry Pickstone sent 500 Mexican fan palms to Salisbury (now Harare). Pickstone had learned about these hardy trees in California, and believed our climate was perfect for them.

Did You Know? The tall palm trees lining Julius Nyerere Way in Harare officially called Washingtonia robusta aren’t native to Zimbabwe at all. These majestic palms actually come from Mexico, and they were a gift to the city!
