The MLB players you see on TV had to be relentless and fight through adversity. A lot of them wanted to quit at times. A lot of them went through periods of doubt. But. They kept showing up. They kept working. They refused to give up. They embraced the challenge. Myself and another scout took a road trip to talk an A ball player out of quitting and he became an All Star, ALCS MVP, World Series Champion and earned the MLB pension. The day we went to meet with him he punched out a few times and tripped over the bullpen mound going after a fly ball and played like a player that was ready to hang up his spikes. We took him to dinner and he was temporarily defeated mentally. The minor leagues allow players to be defeated mentally by design. It allows the cream the ability to rise to the top. The player needed some encouragement from people he trusted. The player needed to know people that he trusted believed in him. There are a lot of stories like this and most of the players went through times of doubt.

Breaking News If you want to be a great baseball player. Baseball has to be pretty damn important to you. It has to be what you do for work, fun and a hobby. The majority of MLB players didn't have an array of interests growing up outside of being a great baseball player. If you want to be great. You have to act like it.

A rookie from Hedgesville and a rookie from WVU both hit home runs in their first MLB games of the season. It's a great time to be a baseball fan around West Virginia!

The biggest thing baseball taught me: It’s life in a uniform. Good days, bad days, and everything in between. Let go of what you can’t control. And commit to what you can. Your effort, attitude and response to failures will continue to shape who you are. So keep stacking days.

As youth travel ball starts… Coaches: if you don’t have enough pitching to safely get through a tournament — don’t enter. Too many kids get maxed out just to win a meaningless trophy. No trophy is worth a young arm. Parents — if you allow it, you’re part of the problem.
