Russia’s statement urged participating states to address its allegations at the review conference for the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), in April. Given this, delegations should anticipate that this narrative may surface at the event.

Russia’s accusations have reached a wide audience. Similar narratives have previously been used to undermine Ukraine’s credibility as a responsible international actor, reduce Western support for Kyiv, and frame Russia’s actions as defensive.

Russia has again made unsupported claims that Ukraine is seeking nuclear weapons. In late February, Moscow alleged that the United Kingdom and France are considering assisting Kyiv in acquiring either a radiological dispersal device (dirty bomb) or nuclear weapons.

State delegations in #international fora are increasingly facing #radiological and #nuclear (RN) #disinformation. It can damage delegations’ credibility and disrupt #negotiations, while also weakening trust in international #diplomatic processes.
