This is a great point by Mike Tapp. If Andy Burnham becomes Labour leader and then Prime Minister without a general election, millions of British voters won't have voted for him, or even know who he is. That's not how democracy should work. A change of Prime Minister through an internal party coup should automatically trigger a General Election.

If Starmer goes on Monday there will be an overwhelming call for a general election. This Cannot happen. That may sound counterintuitive but hear me out. If we have a general election the majority will vote for Burnham and his false promises. Whereas if he becomes PM next week, he will have 3 years to show he is no better than Starmer.

To everyone tweeting that Keir Starmer is resigning tomorrow: How many times do your speculations have to fall flat before you realise he isn’t walking away? He explicitly said he’ll fight any challenge. He’s busy clearing up decades of Tory wreckage not quitting.

This can’t be right in a functioning democracy. No matter how much I’d love Starmer to go I can’t help but feel that Burnham is essentially doing a Sunak. Starmer is the one who people thought they were electing as PM when they voted for Labour. It was wrong when they did this to Boris and it’s wrong now. They won’t be forgiven by their voters. (Caveat: I will enjoy seeing Starmer resign though)
