Senior ex-Woolwich Crown Court judge Christopher Kinch KC has savaged Justice Secretary David Lammy's Courts Bill that would scrap juries for thousands of cases (up to 3 years in prison), letting one judge decide alone. He warned there will be "no huge savings" to justify the upheaval, risks more wrongful convictions and puts judges "in the firing line" for threats to them and their families. Kinch said people trust "12 strangers" on a jury far more than one judge, calling it the "essence of democratic involvement".
