Shuja-ud-Daula’s myopic alliances were self-defeating. His siding with Abdali over the Marathas brought him isolation, subordination while his alliance with the Mughals & Nawab of Bengal at Buxar cost him his autonomy to the British.

1761 Panipat; Awadh's Nawab, Shuja-ud-Daula joined the jihad of Afghan Monarch Ahmad Shah Abdali against the Hindu Marathas. Marathas lost. Shuja however gained nothing important strategically to risk Maratha hostility. In-fact being Shia, he's mistreated in Abdali's war camp.

Sukladhwaja was the brother of Koch King Nara Narayan. He’s fondly called “Chilarai”; the Kite Prince for his lightning fast cavalry & riverine warfare. His victories made the Mughals so impressed that even 50 years later, they sought the Koch Kingdom not as vassal but as ally.

Rohillas lost many men. Even their chieftain Najib ad-Dawlah was shot in the arm & his uncle Khalil was killed. The Marathas suffered less but paid a steep price as one of their top commanders, Balwant Rao Mehendale was killed by a Rohilla sniper & his body was mutilated.

Before the 3rd Battle of Panipat; Marathas & Durranis fought many skirmishes. The fiercest came on this day 265 years ago in 1760 when the Rohilla troops broke into the Maratha camp & came close to the centre. Maratha elite Huzurat Cavalry drove them out inflicting heavy losses.
