Today, I received Letters of Credence from His Excellency Mr. NAITO Yasushi, Ambassador of Japan to Malawi. The moment reaffirmed the strong friendship and cooperation between Malawi and Japan, which has grown over the years.
I congratulated Ambassador Naito on his appointment and assured him of my Governmentโs full support. Our discussions focused on strengthening bilateral ties, promoting trade and investment, and advancing cooperation in disaster management, resilient infrastructure, agriculture, education, and health.
I wish Ambassador Naito every success in his mission and look forward to further deepening MalawiโJapan relations for the prosperity of our peoples.
May God bless our nation.
Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika
President of Malawi

Chief Kachindamoto, who became world-renowned for dissolving child marriages in Malawi passed away a few days ago. Such a loss. ๐

When Promotions Are Rare: Finding Growth Beyond the Title
For many employees, career growth is often tied to one word: promotion.
A new title. A bigger office. A higher salary.
But what happens when you work in an organisation where promotions are few and far between?
The reality is, in some companies, the hierarchy is flat, senior roles rarely open, and upward mobility can feel almost impossible.
Itโs easy to feel demoralised, disengaged, or even resentful.
But hereโs the truth โ growth is not always vertical, and itโs not always limited to your current organisation.
Before frustration takes over, itโs important to understand why promotion opportunities might be scarce:
Stable leadership with low turnover โ People at the top stay for years.
Flat structures โ Fewer management layers mean fewer promotions.
Small company size โ Growth in roles is naturally limited.
Budget constraints โ Promotions may not be financially viable right now.
These factors may be structural, not personal. But they can still leave ambitious employees feeling stuck.
If your current company canโt offer frequent promotions, it doesnโt mean your career has to stall. Growth can happen in other ways:
1๏ธโฃ Moving to a different team or department can give you new skills, broader exposure, and make you more valuable โ both internally and externally.
2๏ธโฃ Take on challenging projects that push you beyond your current role. Youโll develop leadership skills and build a track record that makes you promotion-ready.
3๏ธโฃ Invest in yourself through courses, certifications, and training, even if your company doesnโt sponsor them.
4๏ธโฃ Learn from leaders inside or outside your company. A mentor can help you see growth opportunities you may be missing.
5๏ธโฃ Sometimes the growth you need wonโt come from your current employer. Taking a role in another organisation, even for a season, can give you the exposure, network, and experience you need to be irresistible when you return.
Leaving for a role elsewhere doesnโt always mean youโre โquittingโ your company. Sometimes, itโs an investment in your future within that very organisation.
โ
You bring back fresh ideas and proven experience.
โ
Success in other environments strengthens your reputation.
โ
A new challenge can reignite your passion.
Iโve seen employees (friends even) leave for two to three years, gain incredible exposure, and then return, this time ready for senior leadership roles that werenโt available to them before.
If promotions are rare in your company, donโt let it be the end of your growth story.
Think beyond the title. Build your skills. Seek exposure. Explore opportunities, even outside your current employer, that prepare you for the role you ultimately want.
Because career growth is not just about waiting for a seat to open.
Itโs about building yourself so that when the seat does open, anywhere, youโre the obvious choice.
