@lutzofice @trusovaquadlutz I mean, sure, you can argue that Alysa’s score is “unreasonably high” if you want. But you’d be wrong. The gap in GOE/PCS between two world class veteran skaters is virtually never going to be big enough to make up for an error and technical gap like that. Kaori knows that.

@lutzofice @trusovaquadlutz I’ve been watching skating for 35 years now. I know what it looks like when a skater is happy with their performance and when they’re disappointed. I know what a skater looks like when she thinks she’s about to win an Olympic gold medal. Kaori did not have that look.

@lutzofice @trusovaquadlutz Come on now. Look at her face as she finished her performance. Did that look like the face of someone who thought that she’d done enough to win a gold medal?

@cybelethebest Yep, I do my best to make sure my kids behave in public, and I don’t take them to adults only spaces, but anybody who’s pissed that I have a 3 year old and an 8 year old The 99 at 6 PM on a Wednesday can go fuck themselves.

Before I had a baby I was anxious about this kind of thing. Fortunately, I got over that really easily, couldn’t care less if anyone minds my kids taking part in public life.

@mattyglesias I feel the same way about people bringing their babies and toddlers to restaurants. Get a sitter like everyone used to do or stay home.

@RealDianeYap (1) Kids are not more disruptive than dogs on the whole. And dogs are unsanitary. (2) The social contract is about balancing rights and responsibilities. Kids have a right to be out in public in spaces for humans. Dogs don’t.

@Humorous617 The part of the social contract that's relevant to this discussion is "how to be considerate in public" Humans who bring children cause more disruption/annoyance than humans who bring dogs, so they're the ones failing to uphold the social contract.

This isn't about whether dogs are people. The original claim was about the social contract. Are dogs in restaurants really more bothersome to strangers than kids in restaurants? I've never once been annoyed by a dog in a restaurant. Kids though? Frequently.
Matthew Yglesias@mattyglesias

See the reason my article is titled “Dogs aren’t people” is precisely because I believe a lot of errors in dog policy stem precisely from confusing issues related to human children and issues related to non-human canines. slowboring.com/p/dogs-arent-p…

@theemmacasey Worse to be 45, better educated and more professionally successful by virtually all measures than your parents, you’ve moved up a socioeconomic class, but due to the housing crisis your house is older and smaller than the one you grew up in.

@Humorous617 @SMB_Attorney Completely agree. I just wouldn’t use you (unless you’re really good). My attorney picks up whenever I call. There’s different needs for different people.

@ShawnASearle1 @SMB_Attorney If you expect me to pick up the phone (as opposed to my designated backup coverage) on my wedding day, when I’ve just given birth, or at my mother’s funeral, then you’re a psychopath and I don’t want your business. Nothing is that important.

@ShawnASearle1 @SMB_Attorney I’ve managed to have a very successful 20 year career as an attorney, including 6 years in BigLaw, and have never caved to this bullshit. I’ve worked plenty of long hours and late nights and weekends. But if you don’t draw the line somewhere the weight of the job will crush you.

@allie__voss Three ways to keep costs down at your wedding: (1) invite fewer people; (2) cake/punch reception, (3) “pot luck,” which is tacky as fuck. There is simply no way to feed 150-200 people a meal on the cheap. A pot luck is just shifting the cost of your party on to your guests.

1000% this The only cheap wedding is a very small wedding (and/or one where people somehow don't eat or drink) If you believe the wedding is about having people together, certain variable costs just rack up quickly no matter how savvy you are
Maggie@maggiemoda

I went into wedding planning with so many assumptions about how I'd save money, and it's virtually impossible if you plan to have your family there. Even small weddings and elopements will run what you'd think a normal-sized wedding should cost.

@allie__voss Pot lucking a wedding is tacky. If cost is an issue it’s better to just move to a cake-and-punch style reception.

And sure you can potluck it, but not if most of your guests are traveling! And idk, doesn't feel fair to just shift the costs and headaches onto your family and friends

@maggiemoda Weddings are super expensive now. But this particular venue appears to be both one of the most expensive venues in the South, and judging by their availability calendar, overpriced.

@PchazzzSF @DschlopesIsBack Yup. The red van and silver van are equally at fault. Don’t stop on the highway. But also watch what’s fucking happening in front of you. If you rear end somebody the insurance company will almost always find you liable regardless of the circumstances.

@DschlopesIsBack While the red van caused the obstruction, it seems like the silver van was in the wrong because it was going too fast to stop.

The person driving the red van should be jailed and have their license revoked forever. Agree or disagree?

@KanchanSin649 @oohlaloenas Because Ami took significant downgrades on 3 elements and her overall skating was immature and undeveloped. I’m no Adelia fan and thought she was slightly overscored. But that’s why.
