A dramatic police standoff took place in downtown Montreal where A 34-year-old knife wielding man was arrested near Berri-UQAM Metro. 3 @SPVM officers were taken to the hospital with "minor injuries". The officers were first hesitant to use force, which contributed to the chaotic scene. According to reports one shot was fired. The suspect was ultimately tased and detained, and is expected to be questioned. Witnesses described a chaotic scene with over a dozen officers involved. Police say they used force to protect the public and themselves, as the area is near UQAM university.

On the forth night of Hanukkah, the Chief of police (@SPVM) joined the outdoor Menorah lighting at the Royal Mount mall. The event was arranged by Chabad of TMR. In a conversation with us he pledged more police visibility in many areas of Montreal. And pledged to protect the Jewish community along with all other communities.

A major 2 alarm fire broke out this morning at a car mechanic shop on Alexandra st corner Waverly st near the Park ex neighborhood. @MTL_SIM worked over an hour to bring the fire under control.

Tonight we participated at the annual Hanukkah Menorah lighting event on Parliament Hill. The Prime Minister @MarkJCarney spoke about the resilience of the Jewish people, and how we must stand up against hate. The MP for Outremont @RachelBendayan led the crowd in singing our national anthem. Jewish MP for Mount Royal @AHousefather was among various speakers.

A swastika was found engraved in the snow on a car in the predominantly Jewish area of Outremont, Montreal. Any kind of hate and intimidation must be strongly condemned and must be taken seriously. @SPVM was called over an hour ago, and according to witnesses on scene, they did not show up yet.

Rescue workers have successfully brought a construction worker to safety after suffering a heart attack. The rescue operation took place this morning in the Outremont area at a building that's under construction, and there are no stairs yet in the building, prompting the rescue team to bring down the worker with the fire truck ladder. Just in: The person who violently attacked a Jewish father in front of his kids in a Montreal park back in August, has been set free on Friday. The attack has sparked widespread condemnation from many elected officials from Canada and abroad. this attack was clearly seen by many as a hate crime, due to the nature of the attack, and the fact that the attacker threw the Kippa of the Jewish person in to the water fountain. The attacker was found “not criminally responsible” in September, and has been in the psychiatric hospital until his release on Friday.

Update: the police with the help of a local Jewish Patrol group (Chaveirim) have located all people involved in the incident, but let some of them go due to "not having sufficient evidence" that it was them...

The @SPVM is currently searching for multiple suspects that showed up to a polling station in the Outremont area, and yelled "Allah Akbar" at Hasidic Jews that were waiting to vote. Reports say that one individual has been arrested so far.

BREAKING UPDATE: Montreal police have gathered sufficient evidence to determine that the recent attack on a Jewish father, carried out in front of his children, was motivated by hate. The case is now with the Crown prosecutor, who will decide whether to lay charges.

Leo Kalinda @leo_kalinda is a Rwanda born Journalist working with @CBCRadioCanada @iciradiocanada @CBCNews since 1978 in a career spanning nearly 5 decades. Leo Kalinda has been identified in a @RebelNewsOnline video as the man calling an Orthodox Jewish man in Montreal a dog, saying “you are killed”, to go to Gaza so that “you must die”, and calling him a killer.
