Excellent lean coffee hosted by @UnReDesign at the JPM #meetupCollider last night.
We touched on topics such as: the ethical aspect of design, can an experience be too simple and how to approach advancing design skills out with your day job.

Designers: what are the common dismissive things you hear, or believe are said about designers?
Things like:
- "you just make things pretty"
- "my designs are just as good as yours"
- "nothing is ever good enough for them"

@marvinforte @jmspool I agree with you that people/clients will support what they feel they helped make.
I’m contemplating whether me defining the point where they’re part of the design process as opposed to a design deliverable as them being “Designers” is harmful to Designers as a label.

Despite what Andy implies:
Everyone is a designer.
Not everyone is a good designer.
Everyone can become a better designer.

Remember folks. If everybody is a designer it’s perfectly reasonable to slack off tomorrow. There will be plenty of folks around to run that design thinking workshop, sketch out those user journeys, or finish off that Sketch file you’ve been working on.

The ace @sophiedennis sharing stories of product expectation escalation at #uxscot
How we relate to these in our digital products (cars), our experiences (events) and how quickly our expectations are shifting.

@jmspool @marvinforte I like this way of thinking.
I think when I don’t think of clients or stakeholders as designers I’m prone to thinking they don’t deserve a seat at MY design table. But I need them.
Thinking of others as “less skilled” designers changes the conversation for me.
English

@marvinforte Throughout history clients have always thought they could do what we do.
Nothing about this discussion changes any of that.
Except, maybe, just maybe, we need to change to realize they *are* designers, albeit not very good ones. How does that change our perception of them?

@bria_sullivan I transitioned from being a technical business analyst to developer to UX Designer! I love the mobility opportunities available in tech - I think each move has allowed me to stay in the industry :)

@LiveAndLetDraw I’m going to try and fall back in love with agile and break out of waterfall - even if it means letting go of “perfect”

It’s 9:30 and I’m buzzing with ideas on how I can improve my approach to UX at work - but I’m also excited to try and weave and gripping story into my presentations like Keynote Speaker @muppetaphrodite 🐘
