โ€˜In 1969, when homes were burnt out in Bombay Street, it was naked sectarianism. โ€˜In 2026, on the lower Newtownards Road, it was naked racism. โ€˜The same sinister, supremacist and toxic ideologies lies behind both.โ€™ @ChrisHazzardSF

After Ireland qualified for the 1990 World Cup Quarter Finals, the RUC were patrolling West Belfast. RUC man sees a kid wearing an Ireland shirt and says, "Took 6 Brits to get you into the Quarter Final." Kid replies, "It took 30 Brits to get you into this estate."

Groups of masked men burning families out of their homes is nothing less than disgusting cowardice. This has nothing to do with community. This is outright thuggery. The attack in North Belfast was heinous and wrong. But there are dangerous attempts to exploit that to target and attack innocent people who are simply trying to live, work and raise their families here. Racism, intimidation and violence are wrong wherever they occur. There can be no excuse and no justification for these attacks tonight. No one wants to see this on our streets and I again appeal for calm.

There is understandable disgust & revulsion at the horrific attempted murder that took place last night. I share that revulsion. But the scenes we are witnessing tonight, family homes attacked, cars burnt, damaged infrastructure & parts of our community in flames, are shameful & disgraceful. No one has the right to spread fear, terrorise innocent families or unleash lawless disorder on our streets. I spent today on the ground in north Belfast, & the message from local residents was clear: the focus must remain on supporting the victim, standing with his family & ensuring the perpetrator is brought to justice. The actions of those who are destroying their own communities are totally unacceptable. It is clear that the horrendous attack last night is being used to whip up fear, division & hatred. That must be called out.

Last nights incident in Belfast is no excuse for tonights rascist attacks. Rascists are exploiting mostly young people without thought for the consequences. People deserve better. Say no to rascism.
