The first chapter of my dissertation is published. We identified elevation variability and forest availability as the most significant parameters affecting forest avian community composition changes. These relationships also varied spatially.

@HensonMW_08 Thank you and I agree. There is only so much you can lay out, what’s probably more urgently needed from both the advisor and student perspectives is the trainings that our sci community or edu institutions provide.

@JessJessler Thanks for your comments. I would agree with exact what you are saying. I do think we can do better at creating ads that lay out what we are looking for and do better as Sci. Societies to help students prepare to apply to graduate schools.

I have deleted my ad for graduate students. I have been swamped with > 250 emails from students about the position. However, the vast majority fail to address WHY our lab, use a stock form email (e.g. AI generated), or don't have the background. A thread: 1/5

@HensonMW_08 In most cases, they have no idea what’s expected in the email and how to be professional. This is the case even for the U.S. students, so it’s not just a language or cultural barrier.

@HensonMW_08 In my experience working with students looking to get into grad school (mostly students from developing countries but some from developed countries), the reason is the lack of information about the “hidden curriculum” and professional skills training.

When I realized I was experiencing burnouts, I thought of a strategy that would work well for me, which was doing something constructive whenever I was stressed or wanted to procrastinate. Learning another language was something I wanted to do for a long time, so I did that 😊

HELP PLZ: Who has worked with Random Forest modeling for resource selection? I am STRUGGLING with categorical variables (land cover) and cannot figure out why - if you have can I message you!? lol
