@wholemars FSD is great technology and game changing but the value added with the exception of daily traffic jams is not worth the cost for folks with little disposable income. Driving is not that much of an inconvenience. Which makes FSD a luxury. Optimus may be a different story.

The problem is getting users “over the hump” of adoption self-driving. Before they get used to self-driving? They’re afraid of it. They say “I like to drive”. They say “I only drive 5 miles a day, what do I need it for?” Give them an opportunity to try it at a low cost and get them addicted. Once they get comfortable with it, they won’t just afraid to turn it on — they’ll actually be afraid to drive manually. They may still like to drive… but they’re learn they don’t have to when they don’t want to. And that 5 miles a day will become 10, 15, 20, 25 miles a day when they realize they can get around without the stress of driving. We don’t want a paywall to stop people from getting addicted. We want to get them hooked so they end up just subscribing. Humans evaluate value relatively. If the choose is “pay $99 a month or drive manually like you always have for free”, people will tend to choose to do nothing and pay nothing. But if the choice is pay per ride or pay $99 a month for unlimited rides.. $99 is now “saving them” the cost of paying for each ride individually.

@wholemars Yes. Pricing model is an issue. Also Americans just love driving. It's an American pass time and 18yr old's dreams. While amazing in every way it's not worth one fifth of a car payment per month. Except for tech nerds and the wealthy of course.

@wholemars Tesla's are quite amazing but not perfect. Certain design decisions and management decisions are flawed. This "customer last" philosophy takes away from an otherwise great product.

One thing you have to know following Tesla is that there is a massive amount of anti-Tesla propaganda and FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) pushed by powerful and well connected people. This isn't true of most companies, so it can catch people off guard if they're not aware of it. There are a lot of people who desperately want Tesla to fail. Short sellers, the oil industry, the car dealership lobby, the unions, people on the left, people on the right, people who hate Elon... you name it. That's why I started covering the company seven years ago. I just saw so much information pushed by TSLAQ (the Tesla short sellers) that was either completely false or twisted the facts in an egregious way. Tesla's valuation was $30 billion back then, and TSLAQ claimed it was going to go bankrupt. I thought they had a bright future. But neither the bulls nor the bears could have predicted it turning into the trillion dollar AI giant it is today. Elevators used to be manually operated and were especially risky if the operator was tired or inebriated. Now, you just get in, press a button and a modern elevator, if inspected regularly, is extremely safe.
