When kids aren’t reading at grade level by fourth grade, it becomes much harder for them to succeed in every subject that follows. The consequences ripple through their education, their careers, and the future strength of our state. That’s why on day one as Governor, I would declare a state of emergency on education. The good news is there is a proven path forward. By refocusing on phonics and the science of reading, we can give our children the strong literacy foundation they need to succeed.
