Edward’s height is a recurring joke in Fullmetal Alchemist. He is 1m50 (4'11") at 16 years old, which is really not tall. Edward is said to be short because he hates milk, and many characters regularly make fun of him for his height. In my opinion, Edward Elric is short for two main reasons. After his brother Alphonse’s transmutation, Edward bound his body to his brother’s soul, which remains behind the Gate of Truth. Alphonse’s body consumes part of Edward’s energy, which slows down his growth. The second reason is more of a fan theory, but I’ll share it anyway. If you’ve watched the anime or read the manga, you’ll notice that Edward gradually grows throughout the story. The further Edward progresses on his journey, the taller he becomes. By the end, he even surpasses Winry and his brother Alphonse, who often used to tease him about his short stature. This is also what makes Fullmetal Alchemist a masterpiece in my opinion: you can actually see the characters grow over time, without long time skips, and everything remains very consistent.
