On the anniversary of British Prime Margaret Thatcher’s passing, we remember a leader whose partnership with Ronald Reagan reshaped the world. In his autobiography "An American Life," President Reagan recalled that he “liked her immediately… it was evident from [their] first words that [they] were soul mates” in their belief in economic freedom and limited government. Their alliance helped bring an end to the Cold War, but as Ronald Reagan later said: “Margaret Thatcher was more than an ally—she was a friend.”

#OnThisDay in 2013, Britain lost its greatest peacetime prime minister, and the longest-serving since 1827, Margaret Thatcher. "Of course, no human mind, nor indeed any conceivable computer, can calculate the sum total of my career in politics in terms of happiness, achievement and virtue, nor indeed of their opposites. It follows therefore that the full accounting of how my political work affected the lives of others is something we will only know on Judgement Day. It is an awesome and unsettling thought."

Was it for this that the US spent 80 years building power and alliances? Not to be a force for good. But instead to impoverish neighbours, threaten those it protected, rob minerals from war-torn countries, and break its promises to 100s of millions of the poorest in the world? 🧵

Statement by President George W. Bush on the passing of Robert Mueller: "Laura and I are deeply saddened by the loss of Robert Mueller. Bob dedicated his life to public service. As a Marine in Vietnam, he proved he was ready for tough assignments. He earned a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart before returning home to pursue law. In 2001, only one week into the job as the 6th Director of the F.B.I., Bob transitioned the agency mission to protecting the homeland after September 11. He led the agency effectively, helping prevent another terrorist attack on U.S. soil. Laura and I send our heartfelt sympathy to his wife of nearly 60 years, Ann, and the Mueller family."

Critics are accusing the Ford government of flooding the zone: making a wave of announcements to overwhelm the media, confuse the public & exhaust political opponents. They say the premier is trying to distract after changing access laws to keep his cellphone records secret.
