For the past 3 years, every time my daughter had her labs done, they would tell her that her Vitamin D was extremely deficient.
What would they do? Prescribe a vitamin supplement.
They didn't listen to her when she said she had already been taking one every single day.
No one explained the reason why her Vitamin D, a fat soluble vitamin, could be low due to gut malabsorption from pancreatic insufficiency and very low lipase levels.
She knew that she could get Vitamin D from the sun, and she tried to get exposure when she could, but it wasn't nearly enough.
What does Vitamin D do for the body?
- Builds & maintains strong bones
- Helps the body absorb calcium & phosphorus
- Supports immune health
- Boosts muscle strength
- Reduces inflammation
- Aids brain function
Yet for 3 years, she was "extremely deficient" despite taking a supplement every single day and trying to get some sun.
She's now been home for 2.5 months eating a diet heavy in meat, eggs, and some dairy.
When she came home, I started her on a D3/K2 supplement and an additional fat-soluble multivitamin.
She gets some sun once in a while.
Her most recent Vitamin D level after being home for a couple of months wasn't extremely deficient. It wasn't even insufficient.
It was normal at 32 mg/mL.
She said that was the first time it's been normal in years, and we haven't even gotten to summer yet.
Optimal is 40-60, so that will be our next goal. Hoping to get to that by using the 🌞
But the fact that she's now "normal" means her body, and especially her bones, are finally absorbing the Vitamins they need.
Now it's just going to take time to rebuild. 💪
