Today, unionized nonprofit newsrooms across the country are standing shoulder-to-shoulder to demand that news industry leaders agree to common-sense guardrails around the implementation of artificial intelligence to protect the integrity, quality and accuracy of our journalism.

3 weeks ago, we asked you all to consider donating to those in our unit who were laid off. Since then, you were able to help us fundraise more than $3,500. On behalf of our colleagues & our unit, thank you for helping those who had their lives unexpectedly disrupted. Solidarity!

LAist journalists pour so much of our energy and heart into covering Southern California because we care about our neighbors. Now, @LAistUnion needs your help. Donate and share to help the journalists LAist laid off navigate what's next: gofund.me/3811f054

We're saddened to share today that @LAist laid off eight employees this afternoon, including at least four full-time members of our unit. This is the third year in a row we've had cuts.

@LBMGuild @LongBeachPost Long Beach Post journalists have been on strike since March, when its management conducted mass layoffs. We urge the paper's leadership to negotiate with them in good faith.

I was one of the people laid off from @LAist yesterday. I didn’t take the buyout bc I was excited about some of the things I had in the works. I’m sad I won’t get to finish them, but I’m really proud of the work I did there and grateful for my colleagues and all I learned.

@LAist announced layoffs this week & began notifying employees who will be let go today. We aren’t sure yet how many union members will be affected. But we are already losing 11 unit members and 10 more members of our staff to voluntary buy-outs. We’ll have more to say soon.

As a steward at LAist, I’m incredibly disappointed to share that we’re losing valuable colleagues today.

We are heartbroken by this and stand in solidarity with our colleagues @LAistUnion. This follows layoffs at public media shops across the U.S. and comes less than a year after LAist eliminated 21 roles in a "restructuring." Please support their work however you can.

The news is out to members: LAist will be offering buyouts to staff. It may not be enough to prevent layoffs. There will be plenty of work happening over the next few weeks with our union, but I ask that if you love LAist, consider donating: support.laist.com

We stand in solidarity with our colleagues at student newspapers doing vital reporting in challenging circumstances this week. We are especially alarmed by the attack on student journalists with the @dailybruin. Journalists must be able to work without fear of violence.

We stand with @LBMGuild. It's profoundly dissapointing to see management decide to decimate the newsroom. There are THREE reporters left. This needs to be reveresed — we call on @MelissaEvansLBP to voluntarily recognize the Guild. ❌DON'T cross the click-it line ❌

This morning @LongBeachPost and Business Journal CEO @MelissaEvansLBP began making calls to striking Long Beach Media Guild members informing them they’ve been laid off. We have been locked out of our company email accounts. Reach us at LBJI.Journalists@gmail.com.
