The most famous anti-Stalinist party was Catalan. The guy who killed Trotsky was Catalan. Frantz Fanon's mentor? Catalan. The only foreign official in North Korea? Catalan. Some claim that Engels knew a bit of Catalan. We are behind every leftist tendency.

@jasonachristian @HelenYaffe You'll love it! Helen was my PhD supervisor and this book is the main reason why I came to Glasgow to study. I attended one of her presentations over Zoom (Covid times...) and immediately sent her a cold email.

@LarryAlbertGil I would maybe recommend starting with the works of Adam Hanieh (prior to his Crude Capitalism). But in general there's much more scholarship on Marxism in the region than Marxist scholarship on the region.

@Lauan_al Looks great, thanks! Broadening the question: any other good Marxist books on the MENA region? I'm curious!

@LarryAlbertGil Fawaz Gerges' Making the Arab World on Nasser (though polit-econ is rarely touched on). In Takriti / Safieddine "Arab Socialism" you'll find some good stuff on it (chapter, not a book)

My copies of The Coffin of Honey have arrived! It's moving to see these in person as real things after all this time. And I can't get over how lovely a job Natalie Olsen did with the cover and design.

@jasonachristian I knew that once you reached a certain amount of followers this app became unusable due to how people tend to behave, but I didn't know that threshold was so low. On the other hand, as you say, that bit is such a beautiful and helpful aspect.

@LarryAlbertGil I had nearly 5,000 followers before my account was deleted, and I used it for recommendations all the time. Now I have just over 700 followers and feel like I barely have any reach. I do love that aspect of social media though: resource sharing.

Probably the only pleasant thing about having gained a certain amount of followers on here is that I can ask "does anyone have any recs on X topic" and people do answer. That's cool.

@LarryAlbertGil the canon "left" book on nasser is anouar abdel-malek's "Egypt, military society" and hussein's class conflict in egypt. They have their own issues (still worth reading). waterbury's "egypt of nasser and sadat" is good, also medani's "black markets and militants."
