POTUS’s statement creates room for an off-ramp in which we avoid a return to fighting and eliminate the need for a formal settlement. We can withdraw and use sanctions as our blockade. By removing our troops and ships, we deny Iran military targets they can use as leverage, forcing them to engage us diplomatically—Iran would then be inclined to make quiet concessions because they urgently need sanctions relief. This gives us strong leverage on the nuclear issue. Both Iran and POTUS can tell their domestic audiences they won, saving face and preventing further senseless bloodshed. The dynamics of the region and the global balance of power will be forever altered because of this war—we can’t change that now. But we can avoid a massively destructive escalation. At this juncture, that has to be our priority.

Professor Pape’s analysis is sharp. I agree with most of what he lays out in this interview & his substack. I’m advocating for us to walk now to avoid further escalation, sanctions relief can be used to encourage Iran to open the SOH. Our top goal now should be avoiding the plunge into a prolonged conflict.

Among the eight women whose images were shared in President Trump’s message, I was able to confirm one documented case with a death sentence, Bita Hemmati. But she was not alone they sent her husband to death as well. We are now hearing from @realDonaldTrump that the Iranian regime may not carry out her execution. If that is true, it shows something important: pressure works. There are many more women and men on death row in Iran whose names are not being raised, whose stories are not being told. #StopExecutionsInIran

@theknoxhill I’ve been there, lost my labs a couple of years ago, they also lived a long life. I never knew how much it would hit me. Focus on the memories and just hang in there, it gets easier but it never goes away.

@Julescage1 @AnaKasparian @KevorkAlmassian @elonmusk So get off of it. Why do you continue to make him money? Especially after getting suspended. Why come back, he literally shut you down for no apparent reason. Just post on Blue Sky and show Elon that you don’t need him.

@FlashWireNews @araghchi The fact you think showing off your ammunition is a flex tells us all we need to know about your chances in this war.

Blockading Iranian ports is an act of war and thus a violation of the ceasefire. Striking a commercial vessel and taking its crew hostage is an even greater violation. Iran knows how to neutralize restrictions, how to defend its interests, and how to resist bullying.

This is a good move—it buys us time. It’s essential that we use it wisely. Acknowledge that under current conditions, there are no military solutions and a true settlement is unlikely. Follow the Reagan-in-’84 model: pull our forces out of the region, let our Gulf allies negotiate to reopen the SOH, and refocus on the issues at home and winning the next election, like Reagan did. This is the opposite of what Israel wants us to do. To prevent Israel from pulling us deeper into this war, we must impose real restraint by limiting military aid to Israel. The escalation game is a losing hand. Dump it and walk away.

POTUS is laying out two courses of action—a negotiated settlement, or a major escalation. There is a third option, and he should take it: recognize there is no way to force a positive outcome and simply leave. The region is not ours to fix. President Reagan chose this path in Lebanon in ‘84, withdrawing U.S. forces after the Beirut barracks bombing once it became clear the mission’s stabilization goals could not be met, effectively ending direct American military involvement and avoiding a deeper quagmire and long-term entrenchment in the region. A negotiated settlement is unlikely to work or be taken seriously by the Iranians unless we make concessions on the enrichment issue. As we saw yesterday in the SOH, the IRGC is empowered to act without the consent of the civilian leadership, so it’s likely they won’t honor any deal reached. A major escalation will lead to a very destructive outcome for Iran, the region, and eventually the U.S. If POTUS chooses brute force and targets civilian infrastructure, we will create another generation of radicalized Iranians who will rally around the regime and escalate the war by any means possible. If POTUS opts to strike the civilian infrastructure, declare victory, and then leave, we will only further erode our standing in the world, the petrodollar, and eventually our status as the world’s reserve currency holder. We need to get out now. Don’t double down on failure. Avoid the sunken cost trap, leave now, and put America’s interests first.
